Purpose
To determine where values change when light moves over an uneven surface by using a range of values to paint the different values in a realistic, monochromatic self-portrait;
To effectively communicate an image that looks like you through careful examination of the values and structure of your face.
When painting a self portrait you first must understand that the process can be lengthy and has multiple steps that may not come to mind at first. You must have patience and a steady hand to complete the outline and the painting. You must also be able to identify the contrast in dark and light to define details in your painting. One more thing you mustn be able to do is to know how to mix shades well so you can have an accurate skew of colors in your painting.
