Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Artists Studied: Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
Reflection:
In my drawing I used hatching lines to show contrast. The artist that I took after most was Winslow Homer because I liked his use of hatching to make a detailed drawing that still looks very realistic. From looking at his pieces I tried to use hatching to make different parts of my drawing light and dark so the contrast looks realistic on my drawing as well. Like Homer I spaced out and dense up different parts of my hatching lines to darken and lighten different parts of my drawing.
In my pre instructional drawing I drew small but I learned that I should draw bigger to include more detail in my final drawing. Another thing in my first drawing is that I didn’t have good proportions of the objects but through the lesson I learned how to make my drawings more accurate in size and shape in my new drawing. Also, in my old drawing I smudged my marks to make them darker but then I learned how to use specific sketch techniques like hatching to better shade in my new drawing.
Pre Instructional Drawing:
To make a good and accurate 3D drawing you need to know the best sketching techniques to do like hatching, cross hatching, controlled scribbling and stippling. Because if you don’t your drawing will look messy and smudgy. Second, you also need to understand how to draw objects in the third dimension so that they look like real objects. You have to use different perspectives in your drawing like 1 pt and 2pt so you can show the three dimensions of height, width and depth. Third, you also need to know how to show value in your drawing because you need to show the lightness and darkness of an object in the light. One more thing you need to be able to do is to draw carefully and slowly so you don’t make any mistakes and you can fit in as much detail as you can.
