Agnes (3-6-9 KID)
Rowan Berkeley
Grade 9
I chose Agnes Lackovic as my unsung hero. Agnes's name immediately stood out to me because her story is truly inspiring. She had a relatable aspect to her because she was close to my age, but the things she accomplished go much further than her age would suggest. She learned 4 different languages and used them to write coded letters to the Nazis during war times all before she was 20 years old. Not only that, she also began smuggling Jews, soldiers, and other refugees by hiding them in her basement.
Everyone always thought that Agnes was less capable because of her age or gender, but because of her, I learned that your age will never define who you are or what you can accomplish. It was always an uphill battle for her, trying to get through one interrogation after another, the possibility of her getting killed followed her everywhere. Agnes's work saved around 200 Jewish lives and over 100 Allied soldiers. her ability to work so well under pressure and always do what she knows is right has given me a deeper appreciation for her accomplishments. She was brave, and she was a hero.
