Purpose:
To promote positive role models in the lives of students
To empower students to stand up for what they believe is right
To create a personal work of art based on students’ interpretation of an Unsung Heros’ character and actions;
To reflect on your experiences by writing an impact paper that articulates your personal journey and interprets their work for the viewer.
I chose Sergeant Stubby as my Hero because he has a very unique story and Isn’t a person but a dog. He started off as a stray and was found by a regiment during WWI and he was trained to help the soldiers during different battles. He could sense the smell of mustard gas, detect different languages to help certain soldiers that were on his regiment and he could do lots more. I find it inspiring that a stray dog was taken in and protected and the fact that he trusted his caretakers so much that he was able to help protect them and even save lives. I find it to be so amazing that a dog can learn so much that it will impact a significant moment in history.
When I started this project I wanted to make something that helped show how important sergeant Stubby was to his regiment. So, I decided to make a tank of mustard gas in the background of my painting to help show what Sergeant stubby was best at detecting. When I finished that I also wanted to show something that honored Stubby so I made one of the many medals he was given. I made it simple so that Stubby would stand out and I tried my best to make his environment seem strong and that his presence was important. I found this project to be very inspiring and the fact that just painting and learning a story can teach you so much is amazing.
