REFLECTION:
I think this project really helped to get my creative juices flowing again, so to speak. After RISD, I felt a little burnt out from creating a bunch of big projects in a short amount of time. This allowed me to ground myself and refocus myself in what it means to make art. I focused on combining simple things to make a more complex piece of art. I think this is super valuable in my overall art process because being able to focus on the little aspects and details is what makes your piece special. I learned a lot while collaging about combining shapes, patterns, and colors which is also super crucial, along with intentional layouts. I also feel that this project helped me to brainstorm different types of arts/interests, which, even if I don’t want to focus on any of these topics exactly for my AP study, will be super helpful in making that choice.
I have two pages that are most important to me, despite them not being my favorite pages “aesthetically.” First, I like the bird one a lot because my grandpa, who has now passed, always took me birding as a kid and has taught me to love birds a lot. I do enjoy painting birds a lot and I think I do pretty well with them. Second, I like the one that says “don’t lose sight of what’s right in front of you.” I was inspired to create this by what I saw around me as I was working on these pages: scraps of images that seemed to just be trash until you looked closer. As a senior, I have had to make a lot of decisions recently, which are making me lose sight of a lot of things in the moment and feel overwhelmed. So, I wanted to focus on both noticing and letting go. I think this was pretty meaningful to me as well.
