Cheng-Chieh Yu

Cheng-Chieh Yu began her performance career touring with Cloud Gate Dance Theater of Taiwan. In 1989-2001, she resided in NYC performing in the companies of Jose Limon, Bebe Miller, Ralph Lemon among others. Her choreographic work has been produced by numerous venues in the US and internationally in Germany, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Commissions include those from the Beijing Modern Dance Co., the Guangdong Modern Dance Co., Taipei Dance Circle, Sun-Shier Dance Theatre, Creative Society of Taiwan, and the Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival in Hong Kong. Her dance film "Martiality Not Fighting" is featured at the KCETLink on its global Dance for Camera online platform. The film has received Dirorphte Jury Award in Amsterdam (2016), The Best Short in Dance Camera West/LA (2015), as well as the Best Performance from the InShadow Video Festival/Portugal (2014). Project Description

Throwing Face explores qualities of human exchange, physical humor, language and the disembodied voice. Media tools are used to foreground a dichotomy of spoken conditions, against relational-body choreography. Questions such as, when does language become symbol liberated from both situation and an embodied intent?
