Internet and Wifi

What is the Internet?

Sounds like a simple question, but is really hard to define. Watch the video below from Code.org to find out more about the start of internet.

wifi

WiFi is wireless connectivity that uses technology to connect a WiFi enabled device to the internet. WiFi uses radio signals to transfer data between a device and the internet. In order to do this, you must a an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and a Wireless Access Point (WAP) or wireless router. The video below from Code.org explains the set up very well.

Internet service providers in our area

Local internet and phone provider. Covers 99% of Yadkin County. Offers both DSL and Fiber Optic Service.

Cable internet provided by the cable TV company Spectrum (formerly Time Warner). Covers 97% of Yadkin County.

DSL and Fiber optic internet provider covering 52% of Yadkin County.

Satellite internet provider for rural areas. Must have a satellite installed.

Cell Phone Provider

Some cell phone providers can provide a mobile hot spot that you can use at home or away. This would use your cell phone's data to provide internet for your home. This may not be the best option, but is a possibility if there are no other options.

Notes

Remember some devices (Chromebooks and most Tablets) require a wireless internet connection to be fully functional. Laptops use programs that can run offline, but even their functionality increases with internet. WiFi is best allows all of the devices the portability you want from these products. If your ISP doesn't provide a wireless access point or router, these can be purchased separately at many different retailers. ALWAYS use a password with your wireless to protect you, your loved ones and your devices.
