Glossary

App-

short for application. It a piece of software that can run through the web browser.

BYOD-

Bring Your Own Device; a program at some schools where students are allowed to bring their own device instead of renting or leasing a device from the school for the school year; does not include smartphones.

Cache-

Temporary files like web pages and online media are stored in the devices cache in order to speed up the loading of a page.

Cloud-

a service that allows a user to access programs and services anywhere there is an internet connection without having to install software (i.e. Google Drive, Amazon Web Services).

Computer Virus-

a program that runs on your computer without your permission; typically intends to steal or delete data or render you device useless.

Cookies-

Cookies allow websites and developers track users’ site preferences, login status, and information regarding active plugins, extensions and other information from the device.

DSL-

Digital Subscriber Line- use of regular phone lines to transmit data.

Extension

small software programs that extend the use of a web browser

Google Drive-

Cloud storage provider for documents, photos and more provided by Google. Can store documents made from Google and others as well.

IP-

Internet Protocol address; address of the device assigned to your device by your access point once you connect to the internet.

ISP

Internet Service Provider; a company that provides you with access to the internet.

Malware-

software program intentionally designed to do any of the following: change settings on a device, delete a competing software program, cause a competing software program to stop working, or leave a device open to attacks

Office Productivity Software-

software that allows the device user to create word processing documents, spreadsheets, and/or presentations

Open Source-

a software programs whose source code is made freely available to be be distributed or modified.

OS

Operating System; such as Windows 10, Chrome OS, Mac OS,

Phishing-

scams, typically ran through email, to try to get an user to provide personally identifiable information to the scammer

Program-

a sequence of instructions (code) that tells a computer what to do.

Ransomware-

a type of malware that takes over your device and data so that you can not longer access it; they often ask you to pay a fee in order to get control of your device back.

Spyware-

malicious or unwanted software, like malware, that tracks your activities on your device; can also slow your computer down.

WiFi-

wireless local area network; popular wireless technology that uses radio waves to transmit data.
