Visual Arts (Beginning) F/S

This course is designed to build upon prior knowledge learned during Middle and Elementary School Art. In order to progress to the upper level visual art courses offered, which are focused more on Art Process & Production, students must have a solid foundation in regards to the elements of art and principles of design. This course will focus on the Elements of Art, Principles of Design, Art Criticism, and Art Production.

Visual Arts (Intermediate) F/S

Prerequisite: Visual Arts Beginning
This course is designed to build upon prior knowledge learned during Beginning Visual Arts. In addition to utilizing the Elements of Art & Principles of Design, this course will focus on Art History, Art Careers, and Art Production.

Visual Arts (Proficient) Honors F/S

Prerequisite: Visual Arts Intermediate
This Honors course is designed to build upon prior knowledge learned in Beginning and Intermediate Art. Students will have more independence, and therefore will be held more accountable for quality work and deadlines. This course will focus on Art Process & Production around a variety of themes and media.

Visual Arts (Advanced) Honors F/S

Prerequisite: Visual Arts Proficient
This Honors course is designed as an independent study course for those wishing to build a portfolio to prepare them for further education and/or career in the arts. High quality of work and self-motivation is of utmost importance for success in this class. This course will focus on building a strong art portfolio using personal themes.

Introduction to Arts & Crafts

Introductory course into Arts & Crafts which offers students the opportunity to explore a variety of visual arts media through miniature studio projects. This course is intended to help students decide which Arts & Crafts content area they would like to further explore after completion of this course. Students will have a solid foundation in art skills, art interpretation, vocabulary and various problem solving skills required to move up to the next level of art.

Drawing & Painting

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to Arts & Crafts OR Visual Arts (Beginning)
Studio Art course with an emphasis on Drawing and Painting. Students will learn a variety of techniques through exploration of different media. This course will focus on the elements of art and principles of design, color theory, art criticism, art history, and safety in the art classroom. Completion of an altered visual journal will be expected.

3-Dimensional Design (Sculpture)

Studio Art course with an emphasis on 3-D art including ceramics, paper mache, wood, stone and wire sculpture. This course will focus on the elements of art and principles of design, art criticism, art history, and safety in the art classroom.

Artisan Crafts (Fibers/textiles, basketry, and printmaking)

Studio Art course with an emphasis on fibers/textiles, basketry, and printmaking. A focus on Appalachian and North Carolina artists will also be explored throughout this course.

Arts & Crafts Independent Study (Honors)
Course Number: 54635X02
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to Arts & Crafts and two other Arts & Crafts courses, and teacher recommendation.
This is a teacher recommended honors course for serious art students who want to further explore a specific Arts & Crafts concentration. Students must be capable of working independently. The course is designed to allow the learner an appropriate amount of time to hone their craft both in and out of the classroom so they may produce a more self-directed approach to their own personal style. Students will be required to assemble a high-quality portfolio with an artist statement that showcases their personal artistic style and includes evidence of progressing technical skill mastered throughout their art courses. Completion of a sketchbook showing evidence of the student's creative process and journey will be expected.
