1st PRIMARY SCHOOL OF AMFISSA

Founded in 1933, it occupies a historic two-storey stone building and it employs 18 teachers of various subjects. Our school functions within a Restated Unified Educational Programme and operates from 08.00 to 16.00. During the recent years it was one of the 99 Experimental Primary Schools of Greece. There are 143 pupils with 11% students from foreign countries and 8% Roma children. In our 14.00 to 16.00 classes there are 38 pupils. In these classes we provide children with the opportunity for supervises homework at school and fill the gap between the end of school and the return of parents from work. The school staff is stoongly interested in creating engaging learning experiences for all pupils, as inclusive education is a foundation for equitable societies. Next to 1st Primary School there is a state-funded Special Needs Primary School which serves children with several types and severities of disabilities such as blindness, autism, Asperger's and physical and emotional desorders. Both schools share a common school yard and canteen, cooperate in joint activities, and a number of special needs children sometimes join our regular classes, so there is a mutual sustaining relationship between the two schools. Therefore we -pupils and staff- recognise diversity and think highly of it, work for inclusion in education and believe that all learners can profit form changes, when barriers to access and participatin are reduces for particular learners. The staff of our school recognizes, respects and responds to the growing need for inclusion in the learning environment, would like to improve its teaching methods and offer learning opportunities of equal quality for all students. Therefore, we would like to learn and exchange inclusive strategies with our European colleagues. Strategies in which students with different skills and achievements levels learn together and take responsibility for both individual and group achievement. In addition, living on the European side of the Mediterranean Sea, we would like to make our pupils environmentally friendly citizens to help keep our water clean, and with this project be part of an ecological literacy school community. Through interschool cooperation exchange methods to teach, pupils have environmentally friendly attitude, inform them about the catastrophic effects of water pollution, share information and exchange good practices. As a school, we have no previous related experience in KA2 projects, althoug some members of our staff have participated in KA2 during the recent years.
