This course, we have developed a project with 1st of ESO students related to Jules Verne's novel Around the World in 80 Days.
In addition to conveying knowledge about English and Art, this work aimed to promote an interest in the cultures and landscapes that make up the identities of different countries around the world and its inhabitants. As we explore, we begin to appreciate and respect the diversity and richness that exists in our planet, as well as the importance of preserving our heritage.
The project began with students reading the novel in the English class. During this process, the pupils researched the landmarks and culture of the various countries and cities visited by Phileas Fogg in the novel.
Alongside this, the students wrote postcards, imagining that they were travelling the world and describing their experiences to friends and family.
At the same time, in art class, we made a pop-up book about the novel in the shape of a suitcase.
We formed groups of four to five students. Each group was responsible for representing two cities from the route, as well as the countries and continents in which they are located.
To achieve this, we undertook a project in three phases:
First, we studied colour theory and chose three harmonic colours to represent each continent, drawing inspiration from its landscapes and culture. We then used the grid technique to illustrate the continents.
Later, we studied image synthesis processes. To select and design elements representative of each city, we employed creativity techniques such as drawstorming and SCAMPER. The students produced sketches before moving on to the final drawings
Finally, the students built the papercut elements and assembled the different parts of the book. We finished the project by decorating the cover.
These are some images from the exhibition:
As the final results show, the students worked hard and demonstrated excellent teamwork. All that is left to say is: congratulations! Your teachers, Salomé Aguilar, Montse Reverter (English) and Celia Sepó (Art), are really proud of your achievements.
