Case Study 1:

White star, white ship–nightjar, transmit, transcend

How can sunlight help a nightjar to hunt if it is a nocturnal bird?

This case study looks at how energy flows through the food chain of the nightjar.
We will study what is happening inside the plants and animals cells that ultimately allow the nightjar to survive.

Learning Targets and revision resources

LT1: I can describe the key differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

LT2: I can describe the key differences between generalised cells in plant and animals

LT3: I can relate the function of specialised cells to their structure.

LT4: I can explain three ways that that particles can be transported in cells, giving examples taken from species from in a food chain.

LT5: I can describe how plants are structured in order for them to be able to feed and grow.

LT6: I can link how cells can convert glucose into energy in the process of respiration to the wider metabolism of a Nightjar.

LT7: I can describe how the Nightjar and other species in its food chain are adapted to make them suited to the environment of the Humberhead Peatlands.

LT8: I can say why certain species of plants at the Humberhead Peatlands have been able to outcompete others making reference to biotic and abiotic factors.

LT9: I can explain the organisation of the Humberhead Peatlands ecosystem, with a focus on the Nightjar.

LT10: I can explain the impact that human interaction has had on the Humberhead Peatlands ecosystem, with a focus on the Nightjar.
