The Narrative for our expedition
Our Anchor Text:
Our anchor text ‘is War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo. We are reading this to look at the qualities displayed by both British and German soldiers, and also giving us an insight into life in 1914-1918.
We will explore the characters, settings and themes deeply. We will bring the book into the wider historical, social and political context of the time period, completing source analysis exploring bias and propaganda, using newspapers and photographs from British sources. From this understanding we will create our own posters in the style of WW1 propaganda using our understanding of the social and political attitudes of the time.
Immersion
The Immersion for our expedition in HUMAN focused on the key themes of unification, division, scientific innovation, community, peace, death and weaponry through protocols including: gallery walks, BBK, notice wonder questions and silent conversation. This suggested and provided clues to the content of the expedition before the guiding question was revealed.
In STEAM immersion students gained their lab safety and Bunsen burner licences in preparation for practical work later on in the expedition. We then explored chemical changes by burning magnesium in air, using a notice wonder protocol and adding to our science journals.
In Maths immersion students went to Hyde Park cemetery and gathered data on the dates that soldiers of the commonwealth were alive. We looked at possible ways to organise our data and we then discussed possible reasons for the spread of ages using a notice wonder protocol.
