Journey of the Commerce Section

St. Xavier’s College in continuation of its endeavour to uphold social upliftment, had set up the Commerce Faculty (Evening Section) in 1988, to cater the needs of society, who wish to pursue higher education. The Commerce Section conducts the general Bachelors of Commerce (B. Com) programme in the evenings and the timings of the lectures are from 4.00 PM to 9.20 PM.

The late Fr. Valero Aleu S. J. played a vital role in setting up the Commerce Section and worked tirelessly to see it through. He was the first Vice-Principal of the Commerce Section and the seeds that he planted have borne plenty of fruit as is evident in the thousands of students who have passed through the portals of St. Xavier’s.

The legacy of the late Fr. Valero Aleu S. J. is carried on by the Commerce Section under the dynamic leadership of Fr. Errol Fernandes S. J., who took the charge as a vice-principal after him. Fr. Errol, by his innovative principles, methods and techniques, uplifted the Commerce Section to be one of the best evening colleges in our country. He is a source of inspiration, motivation, and encouragement to everyone in the Commerce Section, staff and students alike; he is indeed the lifeblood of the Commerce Section.  Fr. Errol Fernandes S. J. retired in August, 2020 after serving commerce section for 32 long years. Dr. (Fr.) Conrad Pesso S.J. an expert in the filed of accounts, finance along with many more national, international laurels to his credit, had officiated post of Vice Principal from September 2020 till December, 2021 with same zeal and commitment to lead in front, to uphold ethos of Jesuit philosophy of "magis" to give more, better to student community. Presently Dr. Sanjay P. Parab, is been appointed as a Vice Principal of the Commerce Section.

The faculty of the Commerce Section is indeed one of a kind, dedicated and supportive. Each of them is highly qualified in their own field and brings to the classroom practical experience which is interwoven into the lectures.  This makes learning fun and the students are able to relate to the subjects with ease.

Most of the students come to the College after a hard day’s work and though physically tired, they are highly motivated. Since they have to earn and learn, they already know the value of both time and money. On any given day, the attendance of students is over 80%.

Despite having limited time, there is no compromise on the quality or expectations from the students. Each is expected to complete assignments which include projects, PowerPoint presentations, group work, discussions, interviews, and field trips to industrial organizations, banks and the Stock Exchange.

The Commerce Section incorporates the Jesuit philosophy of holistic development. In order to facilitate the overall personality of the students, the Commerce Section organizes All Faith Prayer Services, Orientations for the newly admitted FY students, Cultural Programmes, Inter-Class Competitions, Guest Lectures, Industrial Visits, Cleanliness Drives, Khandala Outdoor Seminars, Students’ Council Day, Soft Skills Development Workshops, English Speaking Camps, Information and Technology (IT) Workshops, and many more extra-curricular activities. The students are encouraged to participate in various Inter-Collegiate Competitions and have done so with distinction and aplomb.

The students of the Commerce Section (Evening) have been organizing a National Level Inter-Collegiate Competition (Sitare – Stars of the Night) since 2010 offering a platform for the night college students to showcase their talents.  The students of commerce section publishes 'Trendz' magazine.

It is now 34th year of establishment of the commerce section and during this journey of imparting value based quality education, illustrious alumni including CA, CS, CMA, law graduate have been placed in top notch offices in the corporate world as well many of them have started their own business practices or enterprises. Few of the alumni of the commerce section got entry into premier IIM's of India and few have completed their higher studies from top notch global universities. The Commerce Section has been putting in constant efforts, not only to provide quality education but also to contribute towards the goals enshrined in the Indian Constitution of upholding Indian Culture and preserving Unity in Diversity.

The Commerce Section of St. Xavier’s College has achieved a great deal in the last thirty-four years but refuses to rest on its laurels. To adopt Robert Frost’s words for our vision today, “We have promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep”. The Commerce Section looks ahead with hope and enthusiasm and is confident that God will continue to bless the efforts!!!
