-We continued our lesson on NOUNS.
Concrete nouns-- can be perceived by any of the 5 senses [cat, tree, Mrs. Rippl, phone, etc.]
Abstract nouns-- name an idea, feeling, quality, or characteristic (cannot be perceived by any of the 5 senses) [love, Catholicism, fear,joy, etc.]
**Concrete and abstract nouns are opposites.**
Collective nouns-- name a group [flock, galaxy, team, crowd, etc.] *collective does NOT mean plural*
-We classified nouns today. A noun can be either common or proper (no both). It can be either concrete or abstract (not both). It could be collective. It could be compound.

*compound nouns can be one word (grandfather, basketball...), hyphenated (light-year, merry-go-round...), or 2+ words (ice cream, grand piano, hot dog...).
*proper nouns-- specific/particular nouns (MUST be capitalized) *common nouns-- do NOT capitalize (unless it's the beginning of a sentence)
*Proper nouns and common nouns are opposites.

-We noticed the dialogue in the books we're reading!
-Students filled out a self evaluation form. This is for students to reflect on the quarter in the categories of effort/participation, attitude, quality of work, and preparedness.
-We listened to another example of a scary story. Guidelines were handed out on what is expected for the scary story.
1. We are writing a short story.
2. It must be 7th grade Catholic school appropriate.
3. It must have some dialogue in it- properly punctuated.
4. Watch for tense changes. For example, it shouldn’t switch from past to present tense in the same sentence.
5. Before using someone’s name in your story, you should get their permission.
-We were able to do some prewriting for our stories. We will have some class time next week to work on them.
-Homework: WOW (ponder, clamber) due next *Thursday, 10/23.
-Any missing work for the quarter MUST be turned in by next Thursday, 10/23. No late work accepted after that for quarter one.

-Journal-- How is your new school year's resolution going? Journal check will be next Tuesday, 10/21. Your journal and reader/writer notebook MUST be current at the time of the check for credit. *No late notebooks accepted.
-We had a quick lesson on dialogue and quotation marks. Dialogue is conversation/talking between people.... in a story/book. A dialogue tag (speech tag) is a small phrase either before, after, or in the middle of actual dialogue that indicates the speaker. (He asked, she exclaimed, we yelled, etc.)
-We practiced making sentences and using different dialogue tags.
-WOW (dismal, simultaneously) due tomorrow.

-We reviewed for tomorrow's test on chapter 10. Look over your notes or reread the chapter.
*Be able to identify a group of words as a sentence or fragment.
*Be able to circle the simple subject and underline the simple predicate in a sentence. (subject/predicate might be compound)
--Example: The priest gives his homily and prays for his people.
*Be able to label the different kinds of sentences: declarative, imperative, interrogative, exclamatory.

Types of sentences--
*Declarative—makes a statement…. ends with a period (.)
*Interrogative—asks a question… ends with a question mark (?)
*Exclamatory—shows excitement or expresses strong feeling… ends with an exclamation point (!)
*Imperative—gives a command or makes a request… ends with a period (.) or exclamation point (!)
**The subject of an imperative sentence is always YOU- understood

-We took notes on compound subject and compound verb. Compound just means more than 1. We created some examples.
-Homework: Sentence practice (due Thursday 10/9). Follow the directions given for credit.
Mon. 10-6-25
-We continued our notes on subject/predicate. PREDICATE--> Tells something about the subject; what it (is, does). Just like a subject, a predicate can be anywhere in the sentence: beginning, middle, end. A simple predicate is just the verb/verb phrase.
-We took notes on verb phrase-- verbs that include at least one helping verb. I had a lot of helpers with our lesson today. We created sentences using helping verbs with the main verb.
Ex: I am reading. I have been reading. I should have been reading. Be careful of sneaky adverbs. They are NOT part of the verb phrase; they're NOT! I have not been reading.
-We watched a short video (Mr. Morton) on predicates/simple predicates.
-The BIG WOW test is this Friday.

-We continued with notes on chapter 10: sentences and fragments. SENTENCE = SUBJECT + PREDICATE
-The subject is the (who/what) the sentence is about. The simple subject is the main word/words (noun/pro.)
-The BIG WOW test is next Friday, 10/10. A study guide was handed out today. It is also listed on the WOW tab above.

- Grammar books were handed out. We started taking notes on chapter 10; sentences-- a word or word group that contains a subject and a predicate (verb) and expresses a complete thought. Wait! How can one word be a sentence? It can be when it's a command! The subject is YOU... understood!

-In preparation for our story, we reviewed conflict: internal/external. We looked over the vocabulary words from the story.
-We read the story Thank You, M'am by Lanston Hughes! We discussed the many conflicts from the story. We started to work in our study packet to help us prepare for next week's test.

-We will be starting a new literature story by Langston Hughes. We looked at the vocabulary for the story and got that put into our notebooks.

-We watched a short video and took notes on cause (reason/why?) and effect (result/what happened?). Some signal words to help us are CAUSE= because, since, due to, if, when EFFECT= so, therefore, as a result, consequently, thus, then We started working in a packet to practice. Bring the packet to class tomorrow.

-We listened to another example of a descriptive paragraph. We started prewriting by jotting down some ideas of what we might write our paragraphs about. We will continue this tomorrow.

-We talked about reason we write. There are so many. We wrote them on the board! (See what I did there?!) We will be writing a descriptive paragraph next week.

-We discussed the setting components from the story Seventh Grade by Gary Soto. We discussed a possible theme for the story.... Don't change who you are just to try to impress others. We also talked through some of the questions on page 26 of our literature book in preparation for tomorrow's 'check for understanding' of the story.

-We listened to a recording of the story Seventh Grade by Gary Soto. We filled in a grid about setting pertaining to the story.
-Corrected Words of the Week assignments were handed back.

-We read the story Seventh Grade by Gary Soto! We recalled the elements of setting in the story. We will listen to the story again tomorrow.

-We reviewed the parts of a piece of fiction-- plot, characters, conflict, theme, setting. We watched a short, fun video about it!
-Journal-- "In what ways do students try to impress each other in 7th grade? Why might they do that?"
-We looked up vocabulary words for our first literature story. We talked about the author and some background for the story. We'll read the story on Monday!

-We watched a couple quick videos about characters as a review of yesterday's lesson.
-We took notes on setting: where (place) & when (time). We watched a fun, short video explaining this!

place: real/imaginary
mood/tone: atmosphere, surroundings
five senses: taste, touch, smell, hear, see
weather: rainy, snowy, sunny, foggy, etc.
social: dress, language, religion, culture
-We also talked bout theme: moral, meaning, main message of a story (Don't confuse this with genre!)
