Concrete nouns-- can be perceived by any of the 5 senses [cat, tree, Mrs. Rippl, phone, etc.]
Abstract nouns-- name an idea, feeling, quality, or characteristic (cannot be perceived by any of the 5 senses) [love, Catholicism, fear,joy, etc.]
**Concrete and abstract nouns are opposites.**
Collective nouns-- name a group [flock, galaxy, team, crowd, etc.] *collective does NOT mean plural*
-We classified nouns today. A noun can be either common or proper (no both). It can be either concrete or abstract (not both). It could be collective. It could be compound.

*proper nouns-- specific/particular nouns (MUST be capitalized) *common nouns-- do NOT capitalize (unless it's the beginning of a sentence)
*Proper nouns and common nouns are opposites.

-We noticed the dialogue in the books we're reading!
-Students filled out a self evaluation form. This is for students to reflect on the quarter in the categories of effort/participation, attitude, quality of work, and preparedness.
-We listened to another example of a scary story. Guidelines were handed out on what is expected for the scary story.
1. We are writing a short story.
2. It must be 7th grade Catholic school appropriate.
3. It must have some dialogue in it- properly punctuated.
4. Watch for tense changes. For example, it shouldn’t switch from past to present tense in the same sentence.
5. Before using someone’s name in your story, you should get their permission.
-We were able to do some prewriting for our stories. We will have some class time next week to work on them.
-Homework: WOW (ponder, clamber) due next *Thursday, 10/23.
-Any missing work for the quarter MUST be turned in by next Thursday, 10/23. No late work accepted after that for quarter one.

-Journal-- How is your new school year's resolution going? Journal check will be next Tuesday, 10/21. Your journal and reader/writer notebook MUST be current at the time of the check for credit. *No late notebooks accepted.
-We had a quick lesson on dialogue and quotation marks. Dialogue is conversation/talking between people.... in a story/book. A dialogue tag (speech tag) is a small phrase either before, after, or in the middle of actual dialogue that indicates the speaker. (He asked, she exclaimed, we yelled, etc.)
-We practiced making sentences and using different dialogue tags.
-WOW (dismal, simultaneously) due tomorrow.

Types of sentences--
*Declarative—makes a statement…. ends with a period (.)
*Interrogative—asks a question… ends with a question mark (?)
*Exclamatory—shows excitement or expresses strong feeling… ends with an exclamation point (!)
*Imperative—gives a command or makes a request… ends with a period (.) or exclamation point (!)
**The subject of an imperative sentence is always YOU- understood

-We took notes on compound subject and compound verb. Compound just means more than 1. We created some examples.

-We continued our notes on subject/predicate. PREDICATE--> Tells something about the subject; what it (is, does). Just like a subject, a predicate can be anywhere in the sentence: beginning, middle, end. A simple predicate is just the verb/verb phrase.
-We took notes on verb phrase-- verbs that include at least one helping verb. I had a lot of helpers with our lesson today. We created sentences using helping verbs with the main verb.
Ex: I am reading. I have been reading. I should have been reading. Be careful of sneaky adverbs. They are NOT part of the verb phrase; they're NOT! I have not been reading.
-We watched a short video (Mr. Morton) on predicates/simple predicates.
-The BIG WOW test is this Friday.
