The Gardner Dickinson School Library provides access to a diverse curated collection of over 18,000 shared multimedia items, including print, electronic, digital, and audio resources. K-6 students receive literacy skills instruction based upon the NYSED approved Empire State Fluency Continuum. An inquiry model of learning is used to foster curiosity and to encourage authentic investigation. Inquiry is woven into each grade level’s custom curriculum; whether first graders are discovering why leaves change color in the fall, or second graders are exploring what’s fact and what’s fiction about Johnny Appleseed, or third graders are comparing and contrasting common folklore themes from around the world, your child is being immersed in active analytical and critical thinking activities designed to nurture their ability to synthesize information in a safe and scaffolded environment.
Digital Citizenship is a key focus of our literacy skills program. Students are taught the mechanics of information access and evaluation, with a strong emphasis on navigating our increasingly digital world safely, ethically, and skillfully. Students learn how to use resources responsibly, and are exposed to a wide variety of electronic tools that will help them succeed beyond the boundaries of their elementary experiences.
Collaboration is essential at Gardner Dickinson. In addition to formal instruction in literacy skills, the Library Media Specialist is available to collaborate with all K-8 instructors to enhance your child’s educational experience.
Do you want to be a part of the excitement?? Volunteers are always, always welcome in the Library. Whether you have just an hour per month or several hours each week to spare, your donation of time can have a huge impact on our program! Depending upon your specific interests and talents, help is needed with book exchange, 1:1 student assistance with class activities, database maintenance, display creation, and collection upkeep.
