SPANISH PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The high school Spanish program offers five levels of Spanish instruction including two dual credit courses offered in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Dedicated students will attain proficiency in the skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Students learn language in the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its cultures. Students will speak, read, write, and listen in Spanish in all classes at their appropriate level. Colleges and universities may grant students college credits for their high school study if they earn at least a "B" in their college course work beyond the first year of Spanish. Travel programs to Spanish-speaking countries may be offered to students interested in exploring the language and culture more in depth.

You’ve chosen the right path! Spanish 1 is an introduction to the Spanish language. You will learn basic vocabulary and basic grammar structures. Speaking, listening, writing, and reading will be emphasized. You will leave Spanish 1 with an understanding of the geographical and cultural variety of the Spanish-speaking world.

You’re well on your way! Celebrate language and culture. In Spanish 2 you will build on what you’ve learned in Spanish 1. You will have ample opportunity to improve your speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills through a variety of activities and projects designed to help you acquire new vocabulary and understanding of Spanish grammar.

Your cultural and linguistic journey continues. You’re persevering – good for you! Spanish 3 is a formal language class that reviews the basics and presents some of the more complex structures of the language. Learn to listen, speak, read, and write better in Spanish! Class is conducted in Spanish. Students are expected to ask questions, give comments, and converse with others in the target language. By practicing regularly, you will acquire a better command of key vocabulary and grammar. In addition, you will explore the rich Spanish culture, geography, history, art, literature, and customs of Spanish-speaking peoples.

You’re almost there! Adventure awaits! Language communication and cultural objectives are pursued with the emphasis being on Latin America. You will prepare for the continuation of advanced studies at the college level as well. Reading supplements such as short stories, readers, and newspaper/magazine articles as well as authentic films in Spanish language are studied to build cultural awareness and improve reading and listening comprehension. Class is conducted in Spanish and students are expected to ask questions, give comments, and converse with others in the target language.

This Partners In Education (PIE) course—Spanish 321: Advanced Spanish Language Study I—is offered in association with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is for the dedicated language thrill-seekers only! Take advantage of the opportunity to fine-tune your Spanish skills through a variety of activities, presentations, and projects while you prepare for the college placement exam and a major/minor in Spanish. This is a thorough study of the structure of the language. Practical application through conversation and composition allows you to hone your advanced Spanish grammatical skills. Join us in Spanish 321 – all Spanish all the time! It is expected that students review vocabulary daily outside of class so we can optimize class time to incorporate vocabulary into communication. Spanish 321 engages students in a thorough study of the structure of the Spanish language. Practical application is achieved through conversation, composition, and the study and discussion of current events. Spanish 321 seeks to enhance and develop students’ knowledge of advanced grammatical and lexical topics as well as their writing, reading, listening, speaking and cultural skills through formal presentations and practice conducted entirely in the target language.
