As a Physical Education Department, we strive each day to help students work toward their S.M.A.R.T. goals and experience success in our classes. Through the high school physical education program, students are expected to work hard, demonstrate a positive attitude, and actively engage in activities that enhance their overall health and fitness.
Our curriculum is designed to build students' knowledge of health-related fitness while providing opportunities to develop new skills, improve existing abilities, and challenge themselves in a variety of ways. Students will also complete a Physical Education portfolio as a class project to help document their growth and learning throughout the course. Activities may include, but are not limited to, badminton, basketball, disc golf, floor hockey, pickleball, softball, soccer, speedball, tennis, and volleyball.
Our goal is to help students develop lifelong habits that promote physical activity, personal growth, and overall wellness.
This course provides opportunities designed to contribute to the physical and mental well-being of the students; to develop an interest to participate in lifetime fitness activities; to teach students the need to utilize leisure time by participation in both cardio and strength fitness activities. Students will be taught basic compound lifts, auxiliary lifts, weight room safety and etiquette. Instruction will include anatomy identification, muscular function, kinesiology, nutrition, and some physiology of exercise. This course utilizes our existing weight room, track, Flex space, and gyms. Students will be building their own weight training program by the end of the semester.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Strength & Conditioning I.
Advanced Strength & Conditioning builds on the knowledge and skills learned in Strength & Conditioning I. In addition to weight training and fitness activities learned in Strength & Conditioning I, Advanced Strength & Conditioning students learn to design their own workouts and track progress to meet their fitness goals and individual goals.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Strength & Conditioning I and II
This is an advanced level fitness class designed to increase performance in all aspects of fitness. Students will be exposed to a variety of methods to improve all aspects of their overall health. Students will increase muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, speed, agility, and core strength. In addition, this course will promote and improve a student’s nutritional and leadership abilities. Students will have a prescribed balance throughout the curriculum between exercise patterns, nutrition, and leadership skills. Students will be required to track their progress with an exercise and fitness log.
Students will experience the enjoyment and challenges of participating in a variety of competitive activities and sports. They will learn to recognize and appreciate the strengths of their teammates, support one another, and create opportunities for everyone to experience success within their individual skill levels. A positive competitive spirit, strong work ethic, and active participation are essential components of this class.
Throughout the course, students will develop sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and communication skills while learning how to compete with respect and integrity. The curriculum is designed to build students’ knowledge of health-related fitness while providing opportunities to develop new skills, improve existing abilities, and challenge themselves in a competitive environment. Students will also complete a Physical Education portfolio as a class project to help document their growth and learning throughout the course.
Activities may include, but are not limited to, badminton, basketball, flag football, Frisbee games, pickleball, softball, soccer, sponge tennis, team handball, tennis, volleyball, and a variety of other competitive games and activities.
It's a coed gym class with an attitude! This course will emphasize fitness for life and we will be taking a closer look at understanding metabolism and how the foods we eat impact our workout and energy levels. The curriculum will focus on students' interests in a variety of aerobic activities set to music. Units will include:
◼ Use of heart rate monitors
◼ Composing an aerobic routine
◼ Step aerobics
◼ Zumba, Yoga and Pilates
◼ Low level aerobics, high level aerobics, and a combination of the two
◼ Use of handheld weights, resistance bands and stability balls
◼Interval and circuit training
◼Biking
This semester course is designed to develop interest and knowledge in a variety of dance techniques. Students will learn a variety of dances such as salsa, cha cha, square, swing, line dances, and folk, as well as have a voice in other types of dances that will be taught throughout the semester. We will also emphasize fitness for life with a variety of aerobic dances such as Zumba.
