Baja SAE

What is Baja SAE?

WWU Racing has also designed and manufactured several cars for Baja SAE competitions. Baja SAE has single-seater, off-roading cars built with Briggs & Stratton engines. The lucky people who have had the opportunity to drive these cars claim they are an absolute blast to drive, especially in wheel-to-wheel endurance racing. WWU Racing is not currently pursuing Baja SAE, but there is no telling what the future holds.

VIKING 56 (2015)

Viking 56 hosted a front double wishbone rear trailing link suspension. It also carried a new CVTech CVT, a custom CNC gearbox, and a single onboard rear brake. The car finished 43rd at the 2015 Baja SAE California Competition and 49th at the 2015 Baja SAE Oregon competition.

VIKING 52 (2013)

Viking 52 brought a whole suite of technological features. The suspension was a front double wishbone, rear trailing link suspension. The gearbox broke the Comet CVT tradition with the Gaged Engineering GX9 CVT, a custom CNC gearbox, and a single inboard rear brake. The car finished 25th at the 2013 Baja SAE Washington competition, which was once again hosted by WWU.

VIKING 49 (2012)

Viking 49 brought a new direct-acting unequal-length double wishbone suspension, a new technology that helped the car place 10th at the 2012 Baja SAE Oregon competition.

VIKING 47 (2010-2011)

Viking 47 carried a custom two-speed gearbox with a reverse gear which borrowed a gear set from a Yamaha RD350. It also contained the tried and true Comet CVT but brought a new front double wishbone and rear trailing link suspension. The car finished 27th at the 2011 Baja SAE Illinois competition, and 51st at the 2010 Baja SAE Washington competition, which WWU hosted.

VIKING 44 (2008-2009)

Viking 44 carried the same Comet CVT now common in WWU Racing’s Baja SAE cars along with various other classics such as a custom rack-and-pinion steering system, a single inboard rear brake, and a custom gearbox with forward and backward gears. The car finished 5th at the 2009 Baja SAE Oregon Competition, and 36th at the 2008 Baja SAE Illinois competition.

VIKING 42 (2007-2008)

While Viking 42 continued the tradition of the Comet CVT, it carried many new features. The suspension system was revamped, now with a front double wishbone and rear trailing link suspension with a rear anti-roll bar. The gearbox now had a reverse gear and paired with a custom rack-and-pinion steering rack, the car placed well in competition. Viking 42 placed 13th at the 2008 Baja SAE Illinois competition and 53rd at the 2007 Baja SAE South Dakota competition.

VIKING 41 (2006-2007)

Viking 41 had all the same technology as Viking 39, from the classic Comet CVT to the custom double reduction gearbox. However, the car had more luck in competition than its predecessor, placing 11th at the 2006 SAE West Mini-Baja competition, and 32nd at the 2007 Baja SAE South Dakota competition.

VIKING 39 (2005)

Viking 39 continued with the Comet CVT and the single inboard rear brake but now had a custom double reduction gearbox and a pushrod actuated unequal length double wishbone suspension system. The car finished 30th at the 2005 SAE West Mini-Baja competition.

VIKING 37 (2004-2005)

Viking 37 carried on the tradition of a Comet CVT, a custom stressed double reduction gearbox, and continued the custom rach-and-pinion steering, as well as a single inboard rear brake. This car finished 56th and 41st in the SAE West Mini-Baja competition in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

VIKING 36 (2003-2004)

Viking 36, like its predecessor, was built with a Comet CVT, a custom stressed double reduction gearbox, but also had custom rach-and-pinion steering, as well as a single inboard rear brake. The car finished in the SAE West Mini-Baja competition 42nd in 2003, and 13th in 2004.

VIKING 34 (2002)

Viking 34 was built with a Comet CVT, a custom stressed double reduction gearbox, and a double wishbone suspension. The driveshaft of the car acts as the lower control arm, allowing the car to have reduced weight, increased durability, and significantly improved handling. Viking 34 finished 44th at the 2002 Midwest Mini-Baja competition.

VIKING 33 (2000-2001)

Viking 33 was built with several impressive technological features. These features included a CVT, a chain drive, a limited-slip differential, and even double wishbone suspension. The car finished 93rd at the 2000 SAE Midwest Mini-Baja competition, as well as 52nd at the 2001 SAE Midwest Mini-Baja competition. Though, sadly, the team was unable to finish the car in time to compete in the dynamic events, the team learned a lot and was able to put that towards Viking 34.
