Many of the students at Winton Woods High School are immigrants who struggle with fluency in the language. I received the chance to instruct a senior and junior ESL English class.
College Bound: ESL Essentials for Academic Success
When I had the opportunity to teach an ESL class, I gave the students vocabulary that they would encounter on college applications and helped them prepare for it.
The instruction was quite simple. I went over each term in my vocabulary according to what they would be seeing. For example, you might see the terms "Scholarship, Grant, Financial Aide, etc." for all of the financial components of being prepared for college.
I chose to engage them in a lively game of bingo to make sure they were familiar with the terminology. They would have to look it up as I just provided the definition or used it in a sentence.
