As I consider what I want to do, I am mindful that my decision is dependent on what I have seen and experienced. Contrary to popular opinion, immigration is a major factor in inequality. Immigration is a topic that is frequently discussed, yet few people truly get how stressful and challenging it is. I have firsthand experience with how difficult it is to obtain a green card or citizenship because I live with immigrant parents. Despite having a green card, people nevertheless experience unnecessary events. Thus, I think that America generally treats immigrants unjustly. It is an issue that individuals come to the United States in search of a better life yet suffer harder simply to survive and do better by their kin.
At Winton Woods High School there are plenty of immigrant students and they're very shy, which is completely understandable considering they are in a new country, new town and new school. I met with an ESL specialist, Ms.Tenai, to think about ways I can help them. She offered me the opportunity to teach her ESL English course. Which consisted of juniors and seniors. She gave me a rundown of how her classes usually go and the majority of it is learning new English vocab.
Since seniors and juniors make up the bulk of the class, I noticed that I should teach the new vocabulary words on terms they would encounter on college applications. Ms. Tenai loved the idea and once she approved it she gave me the go ahead to start prepping what to do for the class.
Meet Maeva
While instructing a class, I got to know Maeva, a fellow senior. She just immigrated to the United States from Senegal. I had a brief conversation with her after the class, during which she expressed her desire to pursue information technology in college. The only issue is that none of her information is ready because she recently moved to the United States. She is doing so well in school, and considering that she only recently relocated to the United States, I thought it was necessary to recognize her excellence and eagerness to learn.
I can relate to her predicament since I have family back home who would love the chance to come to the United States, receive a top-notch education, and lead fulfilling lives, but most of them are unable to do so because of the complicated and time-consuming immigration process. I'm overjoyed that Maeva was able to travel to the US, study, and prepare to establish a prosperous future for herself.
Maeva and I have become closer ever since I taught this class, and I have been assisting her in getting ready for college and generally improving our friendship. Sincerely, I'm extremely happy that I got to meet her! I look forward to watching her succeed in the future since she is such a wonderful girl with a kind heart.
