Handwash Heroes week at Brookside looked a little different, this year... students were invited to enter a poster contest to design their own handwashing education posters. Thank you so much to all students who participated! These incredible posters will be displayed around our school all year long to remind our school about the importance of proper hand hygiene.
You can also visit the Handwashing Heroes Poster Gallery to view all of our wonderful posters.
Our third annual Brookside Candy Swap was a huge success! Thanks to the generosity of our students, staff, and families, we were able to collect a cumulative 210 pounds of candy for the Ronald McDonald House of Valhalla, NY, which providing lodging and support to the families of children admitted to the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital. This is a new record for Brookside, which shows year after year that the Brookside community has huge hearts (and candy buckets...wow!)
Thank you to Andrea Racioppi of Epilepsy Services of New Jersey who came out to present on seizure first aid to our fifth graders again this year!
It is so nice to be back as the Brookside nurse for another year with our students, staff, and school community. As we prepare for another year together, please be reminded of district policies pertaining to the health office.
All orders for medications to be given during the school day must be renewed on an annual basis, including over the counter medications. Any medications being brought to school must be handed to a staff member by a parent. Medications can not be sent to school in student backpacks or transported by students and will be held in the office until a parent or guardian can come confirm they are the correct medication. Blank copies of all medication forms are available on the health office website, or feel free to email me to request one!
Students who require the use of a cast, sling, brace, boot, crutches, or other medical accessories/appliances during the school day must have a doctor's note with diagnosis and activity limitations. Students with a medical device cannot participate in any sports, including PE or outdoor recess, without documentation in writing from a healthcare provider detailing what activity they are and are not allowed to participate in while the device is in place.
Students with fevers over 100.0 F, who are experiencing active vomiting, diarrhea, or illness symptoms significant enough to impact their participation in class should stay home. Students sent home for fever, vomiting, or diarrhea must remain home from school for at least 24 hours after cessation of symptoms without medication and at least one full school day has passed (ie a student sent home with a fever Monday morning whose last fever is Monday at noon can return Wednesday morning; they may not return Tuesday afternoon).
Copies of all district forms are available on the Medical Records & Forms page, and you are always welcome to email me to ask for a copy!
