Art Criticism is an essential component of a well-developed art curriculum. Infusing the critiquing process into every lesson can be easy and fun! This workshop presented a variety of best practice activities designed to help students describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate art both verbally and written based on Dr. Edmund Feldman’s four step critiquing process and the Principled Approach. Through art criticism, students will become well versed in art terminology, including the elements of art and principles of design. Students will practice “reading” pictures and applying vocabulary learned in art class while developing writing and speaking skills to support core standards. Art criticism is also a perfect way to develop interdisciplinary lessons and open up discussions about a variety of topics. All students will benefit from learning to critique.
