Our first book review is going to be on the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. This science fiction novel takes place in the future, where freedom is limited to very few people. Katniss Everdeen, lives in District 12 where the Capitol has always been able to make her life horrible. Since her father’s death, Katniss has been responsible for providing for her sister, Primrose, and her depressed and sick mother. She began to illegally hunt with a bow and arrow to provide her family with food. Then the “reaping” day comes, where Prim is unexpectedly picked to take part in the Hunger Games. Katniss loves her sister too much to allow her to die in the Hunger Games, so she volunteers to take her place. The Hunger Games is a game for the Capitol’s entertainment, where each district is expected to turn over two children to represent it’s District. To win the Hunger Games you must kill all your opponents, only one is allowed to survive, even if some have become your friends in the gruesome game.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (Book 1)
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riodran is the first book of the long running saga, including five books in the main series Percy Jackson and the Olympians (including the books The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titans Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian), five books in the spin off series The Heroes of Olympics (including the books The Lost Hero, The Son of Neptune, The Mark of Athena, The House of Hades and The Blood of Olympus). For now, we will be focusing on the first series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Here the main character of our book, Percy Jackson, a 12 year old with ADHD and a big sense of humor, lives in a world where strange things keep happening around him. As his teacher turns into a monster, his best friend starts trying to protect him, and a Minotaur kidnaps his mom, he soon learns that Greek gods still exist, and his father is none other than the sea god: Poseidon. To top it all off, the Greek gods are about to go into battle, and it may just be because of Percy's very existence. Follow Percy’s journey as he turns monsters to dust, occasionally hitting them in the head with a trophy, blows up a lot of things, and stays loyal towards his friends and family.

Our next book review is going to be on the Divergent Series by Veronica Roth. This science fiction book takes place in a time where differences are discouraged. You must fit into the five factions. Candor (honesty), Amity (kindness), Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (brave), and Erudite (smart). When all the children turn sixteen, they are expected to pick one of the five to take part in for the rest of their lives. Beatrice has two options, and whichever she picks will impact the rest of her life. She can pick Abnegation, the faction she was born into, and never have to face the disappointment of her father, and pretend to be someone she is not. Or she can pick a faction that will enjoy and please her. The choice Beatrice makes shocks everyone around her. Her family, Her friends, and even herself.
To help her feel more a part of the faction she joins, she renames herself to Tris. In her new faction, Tris makes new friends and even finds a boy that she likes. However, her life wasn’t perfect in her new faction. She was scared to reveal the fact that she was Divergent. She had been warned previously, that revealing this could result in death.
