You qualify for a program through Michigan Student Aid called TIP.
The Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) is ideal for students who:
Are interested in Skilled Trades programs.
Want to earn a certificate and/or associate's degree
Want to begin at a community college then transfer to a university
Want to attend any of the universities that accept Phase 1 of TIP
Want to avoid as much debt as possible
TIP Phase 1 Community Colleges (with Housing): All public Michigan community colleges accept Phase 1 of TIP. If you would like to stay in dorms/on-campus housing, one of the best ways to utilize TIP (and avoid debt) is to consider community colleges with housing. Since TIP pays for tuition, any additional financial aid (certain scholarships, Pell Grant, MI Achievement Scholarship) can be used to pay for housing/meal plans. Consider the following:
Jackson College
Lake Michigan College
Southwestern Michigan College
North Central Community College
St. Clair County Community College
Northwestern Michigan College
Glen Oaks Community College
Alpena Community College
Bay College
TIP Phase 1 Universities: Some universities accept Phase 1 of TIP for their associate degree programs. It is a great way to get your full tuition paid and use any additional financial aid towards housing, meal plans, etc. Then you can use Phase 2 of TIP if you would like to earn your bachelors at the university. Consider these universities:
Northern Michigan University (also a great option for students interested in trades/cosmetology)
Ferris State University
Including Kendall College of Art & Design
Madonna University
Calvin University
Davenport University
Lake State Superior University
Michigan Technological University
Lawrence Technological University
Yay I qualify, but what do I need to do to make sure I get the funding?
If you qualify, the only thing you need to do is complete the FAFSA after it opens on December 1st. Add all of the schools you will/have applied to on your FAFSA. The funding will automatically go to the first school you put on your FAFSA.
What if I decide to attend a college I did not put first on my FAFSA?
You can change this on your FAFSA form or through your MISSG Student Portal. You can also call MI Student Aid at 888-447-2687.
Do I have to pay this money back?
No! TIP is a grant award. Grants and scholarships are considered "gift aid", which means you do not have to pay the money back.
