Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers
The PPST aims to:
a. set out clear expectations of teachers along well-defined career stages of professional development from beginning to distinguished practice;
b. engage teachers to actively embrace a continuing effort in attaining proficiency; and
c. apply a uniform measure to assess teacher performance, identify needs, and provide support for professional development.
The PPST shall be used as a basis for all learning and development programs for teachers to ensure that teachers are properly equipped to effectively implement the K to 12 Program. It can also be used for the selection and promotion of teachers. All performance appraisals for teachers shall be based on this set of standards.
Domain 1 - Content Knowledge and Pedagogy
Domain 1 recognizes the importance of teachers’ mastery of content knowledge and its interconnectedness within and across curriculum areas, coupled with a sound and critical understanding of the application of theories and principles of teaching and learning. During my final online teaching demonstration, I used this lesson plan and learning material. This was my best lesson plan since it was here that I spent the most time planning the flow of discussion and selecting learning activities. I considered the idea that this would be my final class with the Grade 10 students. I took note of all of my Critic and Cooperating Teacher's recommendations and feedback during my first teaching demo and put it into practice because I want to show them that I am capable of improving. After my second teaching demonstration, it paid off. Hearing their compliments made me really thrilled.
Domain 2 - Learning Environment
Domain 2 highlights the role of teachers to provide learning environments that are safe, secure, fair, and supportive in order to promote learner responsibility and achievement. This Domain centers on creating an environment that is learning-focused and in which teachers efficiently manage learner behavior in a physical and virtual space. West Visayas State University is a public research university in Iloilo City that provides kindergarten, elementary, high school, and college education.
The university has created local, national, and international linkages to establish their researches with its vision, "A research university advancing quality education toward societal transformation and global recognition." and its mission, "WVSU commits to develop life-long learners empowered to generate knowledge and technology, and transform communities as agents of change."
The Commission of Higher Education named its College of Education a Center of Excellence for its consistent performance in licensure examinations, research, and publication. Meanwhile, the College of Nursing and the College of Agriculture and Forestry were named Centers of Development.
Domain 3 - Diversity of Learners
Domain 3 emphasizes the central role of teachers in establishing learning environments that are responsive to learner diversity. This Domain underscores the importance of teachers’ knowledge and understanding of, as well as respect for, learners’ diverse characteristics and experiences as inputs to the planning and design of learning opportunities. There are 40 students in the West Visayas State University Integrated Laboratory School's Grade 10-Jupiter class.
Learners perform well on their asynchronous assigned tasks, demonstrating exemplary outputs and high scores, but they struggle in their synchronous classes. Out of 40 students, 25 attend class on a regular basis, and 10 are active participants in class discussions. When others are called out, however, they engage as long as the teacher encourages them.
When asked about their class participation, they say they lack drive and are uncomfortable with the online environment.
Domain 4 - Curriculum and Planning
Domain 4 addresses teachers’ knowledge of and interaction with the national and local curriculum requirements. This Domain encompasses their ability to translate curriculum content into learning activities that are relevant to learners and based on the principles of effective teaching and learning. It expects teachers to apply their professional knowledge to plan and design, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, well-structured and sequenced lessons. (https://www.teacherph.com/philippine-professional-standards-for-teachers/#:~:text=Domain%201%20recognizes%20the%20importance,principles%20of%20teaching%20and%20learning.)
I am a Practice Teacher assigned to Jupiter's Grade 10 English class. Following a series of classroom observations, I've decided to stick with the inductive method of teaching. The teacher uses guided practice in this setting. It is a learner-centered strategy that requires students to analyze information presented to them in order to construct their own ideas.
Inductive language teaching begins with examples and urges students to look for rules. In my class, I present an image and ask students to create sentences guided by questions I gave to them. Afterward, I ask them to look over their sentences and write down any concepts that come to mind. After that, I give them a definition of the topic. That way, it made them practice learning independently and creatively.
Domain 5 - Assessment and Reporting
Domain 5 relates to processes associated with a variety of assessment tools and strategies used by teachers in monitoring, evaluating, documenting, and reporting learners’ needs, progress and achievement. This Domain concerns the use of assessment data in a variety of ways to inform and enhance the teaching and learning process and programs. It concerns teachers providing learners with the necessary feedback about learning outcomes. (https://www.teacherph.com/philippine-professional-standards-for-teachers/#:~:text=Domain%201%20recognizes%20the%20importance,principles%20of%20teaching%20and%20learning.)
It is not only teaching that is challenging, assessing students' performance and providing feedback is challenging too. Informing them of their progress and being transparent with their score will help them monitor their performance. This will also motivate them once they notice that they are lagging behind their peers. Feedbacking can also be done during synchronous classes. Feedback and assessment are actually authentic when given on the spot.
Domain 6 - Community Linkages and Professional Engagement
Domain 6 affirms the role of teachers in establishing school-community partnerships aimed at enriching the learning environment, as well as the community’s engagement in the educative process. This Domain expects teachers to identify and respond to opportunities that link teaching and learning in the classroom to the experiences, interests, and aspirations of the wider school community and other key stakeholders. (https://www.teacherph.com/philippine-professional-standards-for-teachers/#:~:text=Domain%201%20recognizes%20the%20importance,principles%20of%20teaching%20and%20learning.)
"Leafing through the Pages: Storytelling as an Instrument in Reaching Out to the Young Children" was actually conducted 2 years ago. Our class was not able to conduct outreach programs during our 3rd and 4th years because of the scare of the virus. The conduct of the program made me realize how important it is to immerse ourselves in the community. It was really satisfying to see the children's faces light up as they listened to the story, colored pictures, and ate snacks. Their parents appreciated it as well, having noticed their children's interest in literature.
Domain 7 - Personal Growth and Professional Development
Domain 7 focuses on teachers’ personal growth and professional development. It accentuates teachers’ proper and high personal regard for the profession by maintaining qualities that uphold the dignity of teaching such as caring attitude, respect, and integrity. This Domain values personal and professional reflection and learning to improve practice. It recognizes the importance of teachers’ assuming responsibility for personal growth and professional development for lifelong learning. I recently passed the Civil Service Examination. One of the reasons why I took the exam is I wanted to experience how it feels like to take a government-administered examination before taking the Licensure Examination for Teachers. As per PRC's announcement, the new curriculum will be utilized starting next year making us not fit to take September 2022 LET since it will still use the old curriculum. It made me sad for a little while but I, later on, took it as an opportunity to prepare more and ace the LET in one try. Another plan I have is to enroll in a Master's degree program. Although it may appear that I am rushing my timeline, I believe that pausing is riskier than going all out.
