During the 2023 Regular Session, the West Virginia Legislature and the Governor passed House Bill 2024 to enhance higher education infrastructure by directing funds to the Governor's Civil Contingent Fund for deferred maintenance at state higher education institutions. Prioritizing action, the WVSU Board of Governors proactively signed a resolution on June 15, 2023, urging the allocation of these funds. Following this advocacy, the establishment of the Higher Education Deferred Maintenance Grant Program was announced by the Governor to efficiently distribute the resources through subgrants. West Virginia State University received a significant portion of this funding, amounting to $11.8 million, to tackle its urgent maintenance requirements. This sequence of events underlines the state's commitment to improving educational facilities, enhancing the academic and work environment for students, staff, and faculty.
