Language practice is important for all students, no matter which language or how many they speak. Reading, speaking, listening, and writing in the student's home language, as well as secondary languages, will help students continue to learn. Please work with your child on language in any way that you are comfortable.
Helping students with language can be as simple as having conversations with your child. Here are some tips for elevating conversation.
Insist on complete sentences - In any language.
Ask for more detail(s). For example, if they say something about the dog running in the yard, ask for more information ('quickly', 'happily, or after the pudgy rust and cream colored cat).
Ask them to try out more precise words. Instead of 'happy' have them try on other words like joyful, chipper, peppy, tickled, or gleeful. Show them how to use a thesaurus or use thesaurus.com. Just type the word you want them to change into the search bar and you'll have all kinds of options.
When asking them to expand their thinking use Who, What, Where, When, and Why questions.
We will be adding resources here as we find them. If your student is receiving language assistance they may have a log-in for Imagine Learning. If so, follow the link below to the log--in page, and use the username, password, and site number on the log-in card that your student brought home. If there is a camera available on your device the QR code should work to log in.
