Welcome to Introduction to Visual Arts I at Colonia High School. Here you will develop your personal creativity and learn creative problem solving through the exploration of different art media such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, painting, printmaking and more. You will begin to develop confidence in your artistic ability but, more importantly, you will search for methods of unique self-expression through art production, guided instruction and constructive feedback. You will learn the art specific vocabulary necessary to begin in-depth discussions and critical analysis of art and life. You will also learn the basic etiquette of working in an art community and the associated responsibility for giving and receiving critical feedback through critiques and collaboration.
In this course you will:
Observe and interpret reality through representational art
Explore new perceptions of the world around you through non-objective art
Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design
Use art specific language in critiques, discussions and analytical writing
Implement work from the idea stage to a finished object
Learn to use various artistic media
Respect materials, studio space, and your peers
Understand and abide by the art room rules and expectations
Teaching Plan:
Unit One- Drawing
Unit Two- Prepainting Media
Unit Three- Painting Media
Unit Four- Printmaking
Unit Five- 3D Design
Final Exam for Course: Multiple choice, true & false, and short answer accumulated test.
Materials you must have: Notebook/sketchbook, pencils, pencil eraser
It is also strongly suggested you have: A pencil box or case for your materials to be left in the classroom, a smock or protective covering for clothing.
Borrowing Materials: You may sign out materials from the class with the teacher’s permission to work on your project at home, and you are expected to return these materials before first block the following day as other students in other classes may need them. If you fail to return the materials, you will be fined for the replacement cost. You may not borrow materials to do projects for other classes. The art room only has enough supplies for our current art students and we regret we are unable to share with other subject areas.
*All assignments, projects, documents and hand-outs for the course are available on Google Classroom.
