AP + Art Majors

2023-2024 School Year Google Classroom Code: ntfy3df

AP Course Description

AP Studio Art - 2D Design, 3D Design or Drawing - is a full year course designed for mature, motivated students who have completed several prior foundational Visual Art courses and/or have received a teacher recommendation for placement in the class. Students planning to take the AP Studio Art and Visual Art Major courses must submit a portfolio for review prior to enrolling in this course. Students who are unavailable for an in-person after school review of their work must submit digital images for review.

This is a performance-based exam, not a written exam. Instead, students are required to submit a strong 24-29 piece portfolio of work to the College Board for evaluation in May. College credit may be achieved through the successful completion of the AP art exam; each institution reserves the right to accept or deny AP scores for college credit, therefore, college credit is not guaranteed. This course will, however, assist students in creating a strong portfolio to submit for college admissions and scholarship opportunities.

AP Studio Art Course Overview

This is a rigorous program, requiring intense focus and work - both in and out of class. Students will begin portfolio preparation, planning, and artwork construction from the summer preceding the school year through early May to complete all assignments, photograph and catalogue digital slides, and prepare portfolios for mailing. Every student must prepare for ONE of the three AP art exams. Each exam has three sections or areas: sustained investigation, quality, and written explanations. Detailed information regarding requirements for these sections can be found in the AP Studio Art Course Description.

Verbal critique is an integral part of assessment, for both self-monitoring purposes and objective evaluation. Students will participate in a verbal class critique following each major assessment evaluating their own conceptual, perceptual, and expressive development, as well as technical skill, and those qualities in the work of others. Students are expected to show growth in exploration and inventiveness. AP Studio Art Sample Student Portfolios
