Mawbey's Plan
Mawbey's Plan
*All students will share about holidays they celebrate in each of their homerooms. Students are encouraged to bring in an artifact to show the class.
*Kindergarten students will visit some of the countries on their own (Sweden, Israel, Germany, Mexico, & USA) and with their second grade buddies, as well as create crafts, learn to play games like dreidel, and read stories connected to various winter holidays. They will also share some of their family holiday traditions.
*First grade students will learn about Winter Holidays shared through Brainpopjr, read-alouds, and videos.
*Second grade students will depart on their annual "trip around the world", visiting such countries as Sweden, Israel, Australia, Germany, Jordan, Italy, Mexico, and the United States to learn about various holidays celebrated. Besides completing a fact sheet and flag drawing from each country, students will create a souvenir that connects to the country and the holiday that is mainly celebrated there. Second grade students will also create a Gingerbread that is decorated in symbols and clothing associated with one of the holidays each student celebrates in the late fall - winter time with their family. In addition, the students will describe and illustrate a family tradition connected to their Gingerbread Holiday Celebration.
* Third grade students will create a Favorite Winter Holidays book, share various holiday read-alouds, and create a menorah. They will also complete a project: Gingerbread People from Around the World. Students will select a country to research, write facts to share, and dress their gingerbread person in the style of their country's culture.Â
* Fourth grade students will compare/contrast Holidays Around the World and will create posters. (Christmas in the USA, Australia, Mexico, Italy, France, and Germany) Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Diwali, share various holiday read-alouds and YouTube videos with holiday traditions, and will learn about the History of the Christmas Tree that will connect with the 4th grade Benchmark Unit 1: Observing Nature.
* Fifth grade students will complete an outline about their favorite holiday, including family traditions, special foods, and facts about the origin of the holiday. Students are then decorating a gingerbread person to symbolize their holiday with clothing, accessories, or other meaningful details about their celebration.Â
