Intermediate Mandarin Chinese
Course Overview:
The Intermediate Mandarin course builds on students' foundational language skills while emphasizing cultural sensitivity, as outlined by the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for World Language, Computer Science and Design Thinking, and Career Readiness. This course strengthens communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while deepening students’ understanding of Chinese culture.
Students in this course will meet during semester 2 (marking periods 3 and 4). The focus is on preparing students to use Mandarin authentically in real-world situations. Students will engage in tasks that integrate interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication within specific themes.
Learning Activities:
Throughout the course, students will participate in a variety of activities designed to enhance language skills. These activities include:
Interpretive tasks: Students will interpret and understand information from Mandarin texts.
Interpersonal tasks: Students will use the learned information in conversations or discussions.
Presentational tasks: Students will summarize their learning and present their understanding through written or spoken work.
Student-Centered and Technology-Integrated Approach:
The course follows a student-centered approach where learning is interactive and collaborative. Activities will be completed individually, in pairs, and in groups, ensuring active engagement with the language. Students will also have opportunities to use technology, including digital tools and online resources, to explore the Chinese language and culture more deeply, enhancing both learning and cultural connections.
