What We Value and What To Expect:
Maintaining a growth mindset ourselves, we continually refine our approach in order to foster a deep mathematical understanding in our students. Beyond just finding the correct answer, this year, students will engage deeply with mathematical concepts, using and exemplifying those ideas through the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) framework. Throughout this year, students will model and explain concepts with manipulatives, drawings, and mathematical expressions, making connections along the way.
To help achieve these goals, we will use Eureka Math² as our main resource. Eureka Math² is an interactive and highly regarded program designed to build lasting math knowledge. Families, click HERE for more information about Eureka Math².
Preparing for Next Year:
Throughout the year, students will work through six modules (or chapters) in sequential order. To ensure they are best prepared, it’s important that certain prerequisite skills are in place. Below, you'll find a list of these key skills, aligned with each of next year’s modules.
Measure the length of an object and write the length as a whole number of centimeter cubes.
Represent and solve word problems within 20 with grade 1 addition and subtraction comparison problem types involving represented lengths.
Write a missing number in a sequence within 120.
Add a two-digit number and a one-digit number that have a sum within 50, relate the strategy used to a written method, and explain the reasoning used. Use concrete models, drawings, strategies based on place value, and/or properties of operations.
Subtract within 20 by using strategies such as counting on to 10, counting back to 10, or taking from 10.
Represent a set of up to 99 objects with a two-digit number by composing tens and ones.
Determine the values represented by the digits of a two-digit number.
Compare two-digit numbers by using the symbols >, =, and <.
Modules 2 and 3 Prerequisite Skills
Add within 20 by using strategies such as applying the commutative and associative properties to make 10 or by counting on to 10.
Add a two-digit number and a one-digit number that have a sum within 100, relate the strategy used to a written method, and explain the reasoning used. Use concrete models, drawings, strategies based on place value, and/or properties of operations.
Grade 1: Addition Strategies: Add a two-digit number and a multiple of 10 that have a sum within 100.
Subtract within 20 by using strategies such as counting on to 10, counting back to 10, or taking from 10.
Represent and solve word problems within 20 involving grades K and 1 addition and subtraction problem types.
Tell time to the hour and half-hour on analog and digital clocks.
Modules 4 and 5 Prerequisite Skills
Add within 200 by using concrete models or drawings, strategies based on place value, or properties of operations.
Add within 20 with equations that have more than two addends.
Subtracting Within 200 (drawings and strategies)
Using 2-Digit numbers to represent amounts
Adding and subtracting within 100 to solve word problems supporting activity
Add or subtract to make groups equal and write a true number sentence to match.
Add within 20 with equations that have more than two addends.
