Families Fostering Mathematical Skills
How can you foster the growth of mathematical skills at home?
Make math a part of your day-to-day activities. Here are some ideas to grow math skills without using a workbook:
Ideas to Make Math "Normal:"
Bake something together
Play games
Exercise and count, add, subtract, multiply, etc. as you do
Plan a party or create a shopping list
Plan out a vacation (feet/miles)
Make a store in your home or use dollars and coins to pay at the store
Use a digital or analog clock/watch to practice telling time
Start a collection and describe it. How can you sort your collection? How many more or fewer of different objects do you have? How many in all?
Involve your child in solving real-life problems that involve numbers. (ex: I bought 10 oranges, but you ate 2 of them. How many do I have left? or There are 2 shoes in each shoebox and we have 6 shoeboxes. How many shoes are there?)
