Families Fostering Mathematical Skills 

How can you foster the growth of mathematical skills at home?

Make math a part of your day-to-day activities. Here are some ideas to grow math skills without using a workbook:

Ideas to Make Math "Normal:"

• Bake something together

• Play games

• Exercise and count, add, subtract, multiply, etc. as you do

• Plan a party or create a shopping list

• Plan out a vacation (feet/miles)

• Make a store in your home or use dollars and coins to pay at the store

• Use a digital or analog clock/watch to practice telling time

• Start a collection and describe it. How can you sort your collection? How many more or fewer of different objects do you have? How many in all?

• Involve your child in solving real-life problems that involve numbers. (ex: I bought 10 oranges, but you ate 2 of them. How many do I have left? or There are 2 shoes in each shoebox and we have 6 shoeboxes. How many shoes are there?)
