Your child will soon be sharing a 'Parent Permission Form' with you regarding our special project entitled "Night of the Notables/Great Minds". Below is a more in-depth look at what this project entails.
Almost all of the work will be completed in school, but they will probably need time at home to read books about their notable and explore videos/movies or even museums or historical sites (if possible/applicable). Please encourage your child to check their grade level Google Classroom for any additional homework as well.
PLEASE Save theDate on your calendar now so that you can let coaches, dance teachers, etc...know ahead of time that this is a very special school event for your child.
Night of the Notables (adapted from George Betts' Autonomous Learner Model) is a unique, exciting evening on which each 5th grader will ‘become’ a famous person from history! Guests will have an opportunity to interview several ‘famous people’ and learn ‘first hand’ about their lives and accomplishments. This engaging event is designed to elevate the students' understanding of the qualities, characteristics, and challenges that are part of every successful, ‘notable’ person’s life. It is meant to inspire them to nurture and develop their gifts and talents in order to make our world a better place.
The first step in this project is to decide on a person to 'become'. The person should be someone who works/worked in an area that is of special interest to your child. This individual must have made an impact on society as a whole, not just their field and they must be deceased so we can research their life in its' entirety. Students will submit a persuasive paragraph outlining the general reasons that this person should be invited to NotN. They share this on the Google Drive with each of us (dcastallana@wtschools.org and mdauchert@wtschools.org). After approval, they will introduce "themselves" on our Google Classroom livestream, and begin researching!
We are requiring that the students read an autobiography of their person, if one is available. They can read this over the next few months, and we are happy to help find one if they are having trouble. We have many in the Gifted and Talented room as well. An autobiography will give them a deeper understanding of their notables' thoughts, struggles, hopes, and dreams.
We are also encouraging museum or field trips, documentaries on TV, public library trips, etc... This should be a deep learning experience for your child, and it will be very meaningful if they are willing and able to put a great deal of effort into it.
A significant part of this experience is the development of a creative project. This project should relate to the notable person's life and/or work in some way, and should be something your child is passionate about. This is an opportunity to independently design and produce something very meaningful and memorable. The student will be working with their mentor (teacher) to develop the ideas for this project.
The students will also be designing a trifold based on their chosen ‘notable’ person. The trifold should not be filled with information (the information comes from the student through the interviews), but should creatively represent the notable person's life and/or work. They will be working mainly in class on this.
In class, students will be practicing their roles via 'Coffee House Chats', Press Conferences, and communicating with other notables (throughout the district) through the Google Classroom. They will be more than ready on their special night!
Finally, students will be dressing up as their chosen person. We strongly encourage using supplies and materials from home (or school) to make the costume, rather than purchasing items. This not only saves money, but also encourages creativity and flexible use of items.
This activity is designed to be fun and educational for the students. If a parent or student has any concerns or is experiencing 'stress' over this event, please reach out to one of us, and we will work together to ensure that this is a positive, unforgettable experience!
Supplies needed:
a trifold (larger ones are best)
supplies for a costume
any extra craft supplies for their trifold
creative project supplies
We will provide some craft supplies but if there is anything above and beyond the student would like to use, they are free to bring it in.
