The School Nurse shall conduct mandated health screenings, including height, weight, blood pressure, vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings, in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:16-2.2 and Board Policy 5310. The School Nurse shall also assess and monitor vital signs and overall health status for emergent medical concerns in students suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or controlled dangerous substances, in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:40-4, N.J.S.A. 18A:40A-12, and Board Policy 5530.
Letters of Referral will be sent to parents/guardians when school health screenings identify abnormal findings in the areas of weight, vision, blood pressure, scoliosis, or hearing. Parents/guardians are advised to follow up with the student’s health care provider for further evaluation and to discuss these findings.
Preschool Screening Information:
Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Hearing, Vision, Dental - All students annually
Elementary School Screening Information:
Color Screening - Grades K or 1
Height, Weight, Blood Pressure - All students annually
Hearing - Grades K, 1, 2, 3
Vision - Grades K, 2, 4
Scoliosis - Screening is performed biennially for students between the ages of 10 and 18. A student may be excused from the scoliosis screening upon written request of the parent/guardian.
Middle School Screening Information:
Height, Weight, Blood Pressure - Grades 6, 7, 8
Vision - Grades 6, 8
Hearing - Grade 7
Scoliosis - Grade 7 performed biennially for students between the ages of 10 and 18. A student may be excused from the scoliosis screening upon written request of the parent/guardian.
High School Screening Information:
Height, Weight, Blood Pressure - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
Scoliosis - Performed biennially for students between the ages of 10 and 18. A student may be excused from the scoliosis screening upon written request of the parent/guardian. Grades 10 and 12.
Vision - Grade 10
Hearing - Grade 11
