To support the NGSS push for using phenomenon based anchors which hook and engage students in learning the biology they need to be scientifically literate young adults and to pass the Keystone state assessments in the most direct path to high school graduation, we propose a summer academy during which science teachers can explore resources, collaborate, and integrate new lessons into their curriculum. We have spent professional development time this school year to update the standards in our curricula, now we need time to work on implementation and lesson planning. We want to make our lessons as engaging as possible, which takes time to explore and evaluate resources, collaborate with other faculty teaching the same course, and integrate into the curriculum on the lesson planning level.
This session would support the District’s Goal #2 by aligning our lessons with NGSS and PA Science Standards by including phenomenon based activities and higher level thinking to support student growth and achievement. In reviewing this year’s new Keystone Item Sampler, we see more higher level questions which require students to make connections between our different units covered on the Biology Keystone. We want to prepare students for this assessment by practicing these skills before taking the exam.

What to Expect:
This hands-on professional development event will be led by two or three pickleball coaches. Together, they’ll guide you through three dynamic training stations designed to refine your own game while providing practical, developmentally appropriate strategies to implement in your PE curriculum.
Station 1: The Art of Aggressive Dinking
Master the soft game with precise, controlled dinks.
Learn when and how to transition from dinking to an attacking shot.
Teach students how to read their opponent’s movement and capitalize on openings.
Station 2: Drop Shots & Overhead Smashes
Develop consistency with strategic drop shots to move opponents out of position.
Perfect overhead smashes to finish points with confidence.
Station 3: Gameplay Strategies: 7/11 and Cut Throat
7/11- 2-4 players
Learn how to build point-winning sequences from the kitchen to the baseline. The opponent at the kitchen line tries to keep the baseline player back by hitting overhead smashes or drives while the baseline player focuses on third shot drops, drives, resets to make their way up to the kitchen and into a dink battle. Goal- Kitchen player to reach 11 points and baseline player to reach 7 points.
Cut Throat- 3 players
Player one serves against the other two, and if the server wins, they stay on the serving side; if the doubles team wins, players rotate clockwise
