Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Chapter 49 requires instruction in Structured Literacy to be integrated in continuing professional development programs. PDE has also articulated who must receive professional development and the timeline for the completion of that training. Furthermore, West Shore SD administration has expanded the target group of those who will receive the professional development based on our belief in the importance of Structured Literacy to our total educational program. In October 2023, West Shore SD literacy specialists and elementary leaders were trained as Structured Literacy trainers. In Summer 2024, the District literacy specialists will be providing Summer Academy professional development sessions about Structured Literacy.
