How do we know about people who lived in ancient times? If people didn't leave behind any written records, how do we know what gods they worshiped, what food they ate, or what clothes they wore?
One of the ways we know about people who lived long ago is through archaeology: the study of past life through what's been left behind.
An archaeologist might find a pot, a grave, or the remains of a building. Each discovery is like a piece of a puzzle. The archaeologist works to put these pieces together to create a picture of what life was like long ago.

KIDZ ROCKS

Both butterflies and moths go through four basic life stages: egg, caterpillar, pupa, and adult. When they reach the pupa stage, they deal with it in different ways. Butterfly caterpillars become chrysalises. The pupa's body hardens to help protect it from predators, but they don't make any additional covering. Moth caterpillars, on the other hand, create a covering (the cocoon) out of silk that then covers the pupa for additional protection.
Want to put what you've learned to the test? Try your hand at making our butterfly life cycle necklace! You'll just need some yarn, some pipe cleaners, a bead, and some pieces of dry pasta. https://monarchjointventure.org/images/uploads/documents/Butterfly_Life_Cycle_Necklace.pdf
Edible Butterfly Life Cycle! ...so cute!
Look at all the items you have available and find the best match for each life cycle stage.
Place the items in the correct order on a paper plate and add arrows to show the direction of change.
Ask a friend if they can tell what each stage represents.
Materials suggested:
Pasta-Rotini, Shells & Bowtie
White Beans
Paper Plates
Twigs and leaves
Pen
Glue
Labels- Eggs, Caterpillar, Chrysalis, Butterfly
Directions:
Using your pen, divide your plate into 4 equal parts.
Add your labels and arrows showing the flow of the lifecycle.
Begin gluing your items down on each part of the plate.
First Space- “Eggs”// 1 leaf with 3 white beans
Second Space- “Caterpillar” // 1 leaf with 1 rotini pasta
Third Space- “Chrysalis” // 1 twig with 1 shell pasta
Fourth Space- “Butterfly” // 1 bowtie pasta. Draw antennae with your pen
Think you know how to handle a pest problem? Test your ultimate pest control skills using different household items, including a vacuum cleaner and tweezers!
ZOMBIE ANTS
A parasite that can transform ants into zombies and make them do its bidding may sound like something straight out of a science fiction movie. However, that is precisely what the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, or, zombie ant fungus does to unsuspecting carpenter ants. Now, a new study has discovered that the fungus accomplishes this ghoulish feat without infecting the ant’s brain.
Found primarily in tropical countries like Brazil and Thailand, the zombie ant fungus begins by draining the infected insect of all its nutrients and taking control of its mind. It then wills the enslaved insect to search for leaves or twigs about 25 centimeters above the ground – a zone that has the right temperature and humidity for the fungus to thrive. Once the ideal location is found, the poor ant is forced to clamp its mandibles to the underside of the leaf or twig. When the insect dies, usually within four to ten days, the parasite emerges as a stalk from the dead ant’s head and releases spores to the ground to infect other ants and repeat the cycle.

While most people reach for a shoe or a broom when they see a huge bug on their wall, textile designer Jennifer Angus sees beauty and an opportunity for inspiration.
For more than a decade, Angus has used dead bugs—wasps, katydid, beetles, mantises, and cicadas—as her primary artistic medium. Her installations transform these insects and their vividly colored carapaces into elaborate, mounted collages and dioramas that reveal the cultural significance of these animals and hidden stories that arise from patterns in their display.

"The Great Plant Escape" is geared toward children in fourth or fifth grades. The site is an extension from the University of Illinois that is geared to teach kids about plants and their systems through problem-solving. Activities are structured to strengthen a child’s math, science, social studies, and even art. Children can work the pages independently, but the fun is enhanced when parents join in. Parents might want to start a small garden or plant a seed to allow children to see the growth of plant life for themselves!
