The World’s Smallest Snake Lives in the Caribbean: The Barbados threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma carlae) is the tiniest snake in the world. Measuring around 4 inches (10 cm) long, it’s about the size of a spaghetti noodle and can even fit on a coin.
Pirates Once Sailed the Caribbean: During the 1600s and 1700s, the Caribbean was home to many pirates who searched for treasure and attacked ships. Famous pirates like Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny roamed these waters, making the region a key part of pirate history.
The Caribbean Has Over 7,000 Islands: The Caribbean is made up of more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. Some of the most well-known islands include Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Puerto Rico, but many smaller islands remain uninhabited.
A Tiny Bird in the Caribbean Can Hover Like a Helicopter: The Antillean crested hummingbird (Orthorhyncus cristatus) is a small bird found in several Caribbean islands. Like other hummingbirds, it has the special ability to hover in place while flapping its wings rapidly.

June 17th is Eat Your Vegetables Day🥕🫛🫑🥔
https://www.kidsfruit.org/category/get-learning/
The #1 healthiest vegetable, according to the CDC, is watercress. It has the highest nutrient density score, meaning it delivers the most nutrients per calorie compared to other vegetables. Watercress is also a leafy green vegetable, similar to kale, broccoli, and arugula, and is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
https://andreaywang.com/books/picture-books/watercress/
Driving through Ohio in an old Pontiac, a young girl’s parents stop suddenly when they spot something growing in a ditch by the side of the road…watercress! With an old paper bag and some rusty scissors, the whole family wades into the muck to collect as much of the muddy, snail-covered plant as they can.
At first, it’s embarrassing. Why can’t her family get food at the grocery store? But when her mother shares the story of her family’s life in China, the girl learns to appreciate the fresh food they foraged. Together, they make a new memory of watercress in this tender story inspired by the author’s childhood memories and illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Jason Chin.
*Eating a wide variety of different colored fruits and vegetables helps ensure your body gets all of the vitamins and nutrients that play an important role in overall health. See below for details:
Red: Deep red vegetables including tomatoes, red bell peppers, radishes, and beets all contain lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant believed to fight heart disease and some cancers.
Green: Green vegetables are high in phytochemicals, essential vitamins, and fiber, which keep bodies healthy. Spinach, collard greens, kale, and broccoli support eyesight by keeping retinas strong, and provide calcium to fortify healthy bones. Cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, and turnips may reduce the risk of cancer.
Orange: Sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, and carrots contain beta-carotene and folate. Beta-carotene may help to strengthen your immune system. Folate is a B vitamin that may help prevent certain birth defects and heart disease.
Yellow: Yellow vegetables, like yellow squash and yellow bell pepper, have similar health benefits to orange ones.
Blue and Purple: Blue and purple foods like eggplant, purple asparagus, and purple carrots are high in compounds that may reduce the risk of cancer.
White: Vegetables in the onion family including garlic, chives, scallions and leeks, and cauliflower, parsnips, potatoes, and turnips may all lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and increase the body's ability to fight infections.

D-DAY
When? D-Day was on June 6, 1944. Allied forces comprising American, British, Canadian, and French troops invaded the German-controlled coast of Normandy, France. D-Day was considered the largest naval, air, and land operation in history. The Allied troops utilized battleships, naval vessels, destroyers, minesweepers, escorts, assault craft, and battle tanks. It was known as one of the deadliest European battles of WWII.
D-Day will be observed on Monday, June 6, 2022. People will remember the brave men and women who fought in the well-planned battle. The battle would ultimately lead to the end of World War II.
Fun Fact: Operation Overlord was the US military code for D-Day.
It was the largest invasion ever assembled, before or since, landed 156,000 Allied troops by sea and air on five beachheads in Normandy, France.
D-Day was the start of Allied operations which would ultimately liberate Western Europe, defeat Nazi Germany and end the Second World War.
FLAG DAY (June 14th) 🇺🇲
Flag Day, also called National Flag Day, in the United States is a day honoring the national flag and is observed on June 14. The holiday commemorates the date in 1777 when the United States approved the design for its first national flag.
The idea to set aside a day to honor the national flag came from several sources. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, in 1885 urged his students to observe June 14 as “Flag Birthday.” He later wrote an essay published in a Chicago newspaper that urged Americans to proclaim this date as the day to celebrate the flag...
In 1916 U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as the official date for Flag Day, and in 1949 the U.S. Congress permanently established the date as National Flag Day. Although Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, Pennsylvania celebrates the day as a state holiday. Each year the U.S. president delivers an address that proclaims the week of June 14 as National Flag Week, and all Americans are encouraged to fly U.S. flags during that week.
https://kids.britannica.com/students/article/Flag-Day/609267
The American flag has a few nicknames: The Stars and Stripes, The Star-Spangled Banner, The Red, White, and Blue, and Old Glory. Which one is your favorite?
The flag’s colors have official names: Old Glory Red, White, and Old Glory Blue.
Speaking of colors, the flag’s colors each represent something symbolic. Red represents valor, white represents purity, and blue represents perseverance.
There have been 27 different versions of the U.S. flag. Each version has a different number of stars.

We all know the American flag, but how did it come about? Explore the origins of the flag and the history of why we celebrate it on Flag Day with this fun, short video.
JUNETEENTH
This federal holiday celebrates the freedom of enslaved people at the end of the Civil War.
“Juneteenth” commemorates the day — June 19th, 1865 — that 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and informed the remaining 250,000 enslaved Americans that the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln granted them freedom. (The news took a full two and a half extra years to get to Texas after the executive order was signed in 1863!) Even then, the formerly enslaved would have to wait for the news from their former enslavers and were often forced to transition into sharecropping to make a living.
Here’s how it got its start:

Juneteenth is a holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Other names for the holiday include Emancipation Day and Juneteenth Independence Day. The government declared Juneteenth a national holiday in 2021. The holiday is celebrated on June 19th.
During the American Civil War President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation made slavery illegal in the states of the Confederacy. The Confederate states did not follow that law; however, as soon as Northern troops captured a region, the people who were enslaved in that region were freed. The last area to fall to the Northern troops was Texas. When Northern soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, they brought the news that slavery had been abolished. Many enslavers tried to keep this news a secret, but the news spread. The people who were freed from slavery celebrated with prayer, feasting, song, and dance.
The 3rd Sunday in June is Father's Day!
The original Father's Day is thought to have been founded by Sonora Dodd in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Sonora and her five siblings were raised by their single-parent dad. She thought that since there was a Mother's Day, there should be a day to honor fathers as well!
Here are some dates when the day is celebrated in different countries:
Russia - February 23
Denmark - June 5
Brazil - Second Sunday of August
Australia and New Zealand - First Sunday of September
Egypt and Syria - June 21
Indonesia - November 12

How a boat made from flip flops is helping to save the ocean...
https://www.bookwormforkids.com/2023/03/todays-read-flipflopi-by-linda-ravin.html
The idea to create The Flipflopi came to project founder Ben Morison in 2015 after he was struck by the amounts of plastic, especially flipflops, littering the beautiful beaches he deeply loved.
He thought that building a boat from this plastic waste would be an effective way to celebrate the centuries old traditional craft of dhow building that is a cornerstone of the Swahili culture of our coastal region, while also sharing a positive message about the need for change.
Together with Ali Skanda, a renowned dhow builder from Lamu and Dipesh Pabari, a plastic pollution campaigner, they set about building a traditional sailing dhow entirely from waste plastic.

Silent Days,Silent Dream by Allen Say
What is it like to be deaf and mute? What is it like to be autistic and maybe even dyslexic, as well?
James Castle was born in 1899 on a farm in Utah. He spent most of his life in an abandoned chicken house and a small mobile home creating astonishing works of art. Drawing with sticks dipped in soot and saliva on scraps of discarded paper, he produced thousands of pictures before his death in 1977. Today, his work is shown in major galleries around the world.

"STOP Bullying" Videos
https://www.stopbullying.gov/videos-social-media
Bullying is being mean to someone over and over again. Bullying often includes:
Teasing
Talking about hurting someone
Spreading rumors
Leaving kids out on purpose
Attacking someone by hitting them or yelling at them
Bullying does not always happen in person. Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that happens online or through text messages or emails.
Kids bully others for many reasons, they may:
Want to copy their friends
Think bullying will help them fit in
Think they are better than the kid they are bullying
Bullying is never ok. Those who bully use power to hurt people. Power does not always mean bigger or stronger. Power can also mean popular or smart. Or, the kid doing the bullying may know a secret about the kid being bullied.
Are you being bullied? Do you see bullying at your school? There are things you can do to keep yourself and the kids you know safe from bullying.
When kids see bullying, they may not know what to do. They may feel depressed or worried. They may be absent from school because they don’t feel safe. They may join in or stay silent so they won’t get bullied themselves. They may stand up to the bully. But the best thing to do is get an adult who will stop the bullying on the spot.

Have you ever wondered why the non-fiction books in the West Springfield Public Library, our school library, and other libraries are arranged on the shelves the way they are? What do all those numbers on the books’ spines (call numbers) mean? The Dewey Decimal System is a way to put books in order by subject. It is often used in public libraries and schools in the United States and other countries. It places the books on the shelf by subject using numbers from 000 to 999. It is called "decimal" because it uses numbers to the right of the decimal point for more detail. Each subject has its own group of numbers. The system was created by Melvil Dewey, born on December 10th, 1851.
The Dewey Decimal System organizes information by grouping books about the same subject together. From the general to the specific, a book’s subject is represented by a series of numbers between 000 and 999. These numbers are used to create the spine codes, known as “call numbers,” for each item.
000 – Computer science, information, and general works
100 – Philosophy and psychology
200 – Religion
300 – Social sciences
400 – Language
500 – Science
600 – Technology
700 – Arts and recreation
800 – Literature
From a young age, Melvil Dewey focused on organization, simplification, and efficiency. Born as "Melville", he actually removed letters from his name he found unnecessary, becoming Melvil, which he believed was more efficient! He applied his vision for a more organized and efficient world at the Amherst College library, when he was given the job of reclassifying their books while working there as a student assistant at the age of 21. He developed his classification system, the Dewey Decimal System!

While most people reach for a shoe or a broom when they see a huge bug on their wall, textile designer Jennifer Angus sees beauty and an opportunity for inspiration.
For more than a decade, Angus has used dead bugs—wasps, katydid, beetles, mantises, and cicadas—as her primary artistic medium. Her installations transform these insects and their vividly colored carapaces into elaborate, mounted collages and dioramas that reveal the cultural significance of these animals and hidden stories that arise from patterns in their display.

Spying has gone on since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese used spies more than 2,000 years ago. European kings and queens almost always had spies. These spies kept track of enemies at home and in other countries.
Spies were an important part of the American Revolution and the American Civil War. Spies also played major roles in World War I, World War II, and the Cold War.
In the 1900s many governments created organizations to collect secret information about enemies. The KGB was the main spying group for the Soviet Union. The British Secret Intelligence Service (also called MI6) and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are still active today...

Silk Road Fables
The Silk Road was a group of trade routes that went across Asia to the Mediterranean Sea. The Silk Road linked Asia with Europe. Traders and travelers began using the Silk Road more than 2,000 years ago. This let China trade with the Middle East and the Mediterranean world. It was called the Silk Road because silk was traded along it. At the time, silk was only made in China, and it was a valuable material. The Silk Road remained in use until the late Middle Ages. Today, a small part of the old route is a paved highway between Pakistan and China.

Scary Stories...
This story is good for scaring your kids at any time, but it is especially excellent if you’re camping, or planning to go for a hike. For a better effect, instead of just saying clap, actually clap, especially for the last line of the story.
A family was camping and left their tent to go on a day hike. They were a few hours from their campsite when a storm suddenly blew up. They became disoriented in the wind and driving rain.
They tried to trace their steps back to the campsite but became lost in the unfamiliar backcountry. Being experienced hikers, they knew once they were lost it was best to stay in one place than wander in the woods, so they prepared to settle down and wait for rescue.
Darkness fell, and the family built a fire to keep warm. As they snuggled up against each other and started to drift off to sleep, they heard a noise coming from the trees.
“Who’s there?” one of the parents called, but there was no answer.
Then they heard the sound again. But once more, when they called out, there was no answer.
“Perhaps it’s someone who can’t speak,” suggested the daughter. So her mom called out, “Is there anyone there? Clap once for yes and twice for no.”
There was one clap.
“You were right,” the parents said to their daughter. “There is someone out there.”
“Are you here to rescue us?” shouted the mom.
Clap clap.
“Are you lost like us?”
Clap clap.
“Do you live out here in the woods?”
Clap clap.
“Let me try,” said the son. “Are you a boy?”
Clap clap.
“Are you a girl?”
Clap clap.
They all looked at each other, puzzled.
Thinking he was being funny, the son asked: “Are you human?”
Clap clap.
Now, the family was scared.
“Are you alone?” called the mom.
Clap clap.
The family huddled together more.
“How many of you are there then?”
Clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap ….
Children aged 8 years and up will enjoy this kids’ scary story. For extra punch, load an appropriate photo onto your phone, show it to your audience at the end of the story, and tell the kids you were the babysitter in the story.
A teenage girl had been babysitting for the same family for a few years. The children were generally well behaved, and she enjoyed looking after them.
One day the family called the babysitter with a special request.
“My sister and her husband died in an accident, and we have taken in their daughter,” the father said. “She is very quiet after what happened to her parents, but she is no trouble. Would you mind looking after her as well as the other children this Saturday?”
The babysitter said she didn’t mind at all, and on Saturday evening, she went to the family’s house.
The children settled down in bed and they all quickly fell asleep, except the niece. The little girl came back downstairs and asked if she could sit with the babysitter because the monster that killed her parents wouldn’t let her go to sleep.
Thinking the little girl was imagining things, but understanding she had just lost her parents, the babysitter decided to let the little girl sit with her.
Seeing the babysitter’s phone, the little girl asked if she could take some photos with it and the babysitter said yes. The little girl cheered up, just a little, and walked around the room taking photos of her teddy in different spots and snapping sad-looking selfies.
Every now and then the little girl would run back to the babysitter, crying, and asking her to chase away the monster. To make the little girl feel better, the babysitter would pretend to chase it away.
After a while the little girl could stay awake no longer and fell asleep on the sofa. The babysitter carried her up to bed, tucked her in, and went back downstairs.
She picked up her phone with the intention of deleting the photos the little girl had taken. But when she began to look at them, she let out a scream. In each of the selfies the little girl had taken, behind her, there was a pair of red eyes staring out of a monster’s face.
