Homework takes time. But it doesn’t have to take too much time. You want time to play, relax, and do other things, too. If you learn how to get organized and get focused, then you can get it done in a lot less time and with a lot less stress.

"READ ACROSS AMERICA" DAY is March 2nd!
*Read Across America is a nationwide event that encourages children to develop a lifelong love for reading. Organized by the National Education Association (NEA), this annual celebration highlights the joy of books and the power of storytelling, bringing schools, libraries, and families together to make reading a fun and engaging part of everyday life.
Read Across America 2026 takes place on Monday, March 2nd. This special date marks the birthday of Dr. Seuss, one of the most influential children’s authors of all time. While the official event happens on this day, schools and communities often celebrate National Reading Month throughout March, with various reading activities, book-themed events, and fun literacy challenges.
Parents play a key role in building strong reading habits! Here are some easy ways to encourage reading at home:
Make Reading a Daily Habit: Set aside 15–20 minutes a day for family reading time.
Let Kids Choose Their Books: Allow children to pick stories they’re excited about to keep them engaged.
Read Together: Even as children get older, reading out loud together helps strengthen comprehension and discussion skills.
Visit the Library Often: Regular trips to the library can make finding new books exciting.
Lead by Example: When kids see parents enjoying books, they’re more likely to develop a love for reading too!

How to Follow the 2026 Race
Official Site: Iditarod.com provides real-time GPS tracking!
The Iditarod Race, formally known as Trail Sled Dog Race begins on the first Saturday of March and continues for about 10 to 14 days.
Each year mushers, with the help of their sled dogs, race across Alaska's rugged and wild terrain from Anchorage to Nome. They compete for nearly $50,000 in first-place prize money...
In 1925, a life-or-death race to rescue the children of Nome, AK, from disease made an international hero of one sled dog — and eventually led to the creation of Alaska’s Iditarod sled dog race.
In January 1925, doctors realized that a potentially deadly diphtheria epidemic was poised to sweep through Nome’s young people. The only serum that could stop the outbreak was in Anchorage, nearly a thousand miles away. But the lone aircraft that could quickly deliver the medicine had been dismantled for the winter. In desperation, officials turned to a much lower-tech solution: moving the medicine by sled dog.
A musher embarked from Anchorage on the first leg of a remarkable dog-sled relay aimed at delivering the needed serum to Nome. More than 20 mushers took part, battling temperatures that rarely rose above 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit and winds that sometimes blew strong enough to knock over sleds and dogs. Reporters brought news of the race to a world suddenly transfixed by the drama in the far north.
On February 1, 1925, the package was handed off for the last time to a musher named Gunnar Kassen in the village of Bluff. Kassen’s sled dog team, led by Balto, set off to cover the final leg to Nome.
Soon after the team left Nenana, a blinding blizzard began, dropping temperatures to -50 degrees and generating wind gusts in excess of 50 mph. Kassen found himself unable to navigate, and almost gave up all hope of making it to Nome in time. But Balto knew the trail well, and, following his instincts, led the team through the cold and snow.
Over the next 20 hours, Balto slowly led his sled dog team over the final 53 miles. On February 2 at 5.30 AM, the team finally arrived in Nome. The dogs were too tired to even bark, but the serum had successfully been delivered — only seven days after leaving Anchorage, and just 127 1/2 hours after leaving Nenana.
Balto was suddenly a world-famous celebrity; for two years after the serum run, the dog and some of his teammates traversed the continental United States as part of a traveling show, which concluded with the unveiling of a life size statue of Balto in New York City’s Central Park on December 17, 1925. Sculpted by F.G. Roth, the bronze sculpture is New York’s only statue commemorating a dog. The statue includes a plaque with an inscription that reads:
“Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed anti toxin 600 miles over treacherous waters, through arctic blizzards, from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the winter of 1925 – Endurance, Fidelity, Intelligence.”
After Balto died in 1933, his body was preserved and displayed at Cleveland’s Natural History Museum.
On the first Saturday in March, the annual event known as "The Last Great Race on Earth" -- the Iditarod Sled Dog Race -- begins! This competition challenges entrants to traverse more than 1,100 miles of Alaskan terrain in extreme weather conditions under the power of teams of sled dogs!

Take the thrill of the chase to a new level in your reading program! Have a replica trail map in your room with each student's name on a small image of a sled dog. Start them off in Anchorage and have them read, read, READ their way to Nome! Each page read can equal a mile on the trail. Move the students' dogs along as they read through the month of March. As students accumulate 1,000 miles, recognize them for completing the race!

How a boat made from flip flops is helping to save the ocean...
https://www.bookwormforkids.com/2023/03/todays-read-flipflopi-by-linda-ravin.html
The idea to create The Flipflopi came to project founder Ben Morison in 2015 after he was struck by the amounts of plastic, especially flipflops, littering the beautiful beaches he deeply loved.
He thought that building a boat from this plastic waste would be an effective way to celebrate the centuries old traditional craft of dhow building that is a cornerstone of the Swahili culture of our coastal region, while also sharing a positive message about the need for change.
Together with Ali Skanda, a renowned dhow builder from Lamu and Dipesh Pabari, a plastic pollution campaigner, they set about building a traditional sailing dhow entirely from waste plastic.

Silent Days,Silent Dream by Allen Say
What is it like to be deaf and mute? What is it like to be autistic and maybe even dyslexic, as well?
James Castle was born in 1899 on a farm in Utah. He spent most of his life in an abandoned chicken house and a small mobile home creating astonishing works of art. Drawing with sticks dipped in soot and saliva on scraps of discarded paper, he produced thousands of pictures before his death in 1977. Today, his work is shown in major galleries around the world.

"STOP Bullying" Videos
https://www.stopbullying.gov/videos-social-media
Bullying is being mean to someone over and over again. Bullying often includes:
Teasing
Talking about hurting someone
Spreading rumors
Leaving kids out on purpose
Attacking someone by hitting them or yelling at them
Bullying does not always happen in person. Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that happens online or through text messages or emails.
Kids bully others for many reasons, they may:
Want to copy their friends
Think bullying will help them fit in
Think they are better than the kid they are bullying
Bullying is never ok. Those who bully use power to hurt people. Power does not always mean bigger or stronger. Power can also mean popular or smart. Or, the kid doing the bullying may know a secret about the kid being bullied.
Are you being bullied? Do you see bullying at your school? There are things you can do to keep yourself and the kids you know safe from bullying.
When kids see bullying, they may not know what to do. They may feel depressed or worried. They may be absent from school because they don’t feel safe. They may join in or stay silent so they won’t get bullied themselves. They may stand up to the bully. But the best thing to do is get an adult who will stop the bullying on the spot.

Have you ever wondered why the non-fiction books in the West Springfield Public Library, our school library, and other libraries are arranged on the shelves the way they are? What do all those numbers on the books’ spines (call numbers) mean? The Dewey Decimal System is a way to put books in order by subject. It is often used in public libraries and schools in the United States and other countries. It places the books on the shelf by subject using numbers from 000 to 999. It is called "decimal" because it uses numbers to the right of the decimal point for more detail. Each subject has its own group of numbers. The system was created by Melvil Dewey, born on December 10th, 1851.
The Dewey Decimal System organizes information by grouping books about the same subject together. From the general to the specific, a book’s subject is represented by a series of numbers between 000 and 999. These numbers are used to create the spine codes, known as “call numbers,” for each item.
000 – Computer science, information, and general works
100 – Philosophy and psychology
200 – Religion
300 – Social sciences
400 – Language
500 – Science
600 – Technology
700 – Arts and recreation
800 – Literature
From a young age, Melvil Dewey focused on organization, simplification, and efficiency. Born as "Melville", he actually removed letters from his name he found unnecessary, becoming Melvil, which he believed was more efficient! He applied his vision for a more organized and efficient world at the Amherst College library, when he was given the job of reclassifying their books while working there as a student assistant at the age of 21. He developed his classification system, the Dewey Decimal System!

While most people reach for a shoe or a broom when they see a huge bug on their wall, textile designer Jennifer Angus sees beauty and an opportunity for inspiration.
For more than a decade, Angus has used dead bugs—wasps, katydid, beetles, mantises, and cicadas—as her primary artistic medium. Her installations transform these insects and their vividly colored carapaces into elaborate, mounted collages and dioramas that reveal the cultural significance of these animals and hidden stories that arise from patterns in their display.

Spying has gone on since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese used spies more than 2,000 years ago. European kings and queens almost always had spies. These spies kept track of enemies at home and in other countries.
Spies were an important part of the American Revolution and the American Civil War. Spies also played major roles in World War I, World War II, and the Cold War.
In the 1900s many governments created organizations to collect secret information about enemies. The KGB was the main spying group for the Soviet Union. The British Secret Intelligence Service (also called MI6) and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are still active today...

If you think having a litter of puppies is a lot of work, imagine how Tia felt when she gave birth to 24 of them. Tia, a Neapolitan mastiff, owned by Damian Ward and Anne Kellegher of Manea, Cambridgeshire, UK, holds the Guinness World Record for the largest litter of puppies ever born. She delivered them by Caesarian section on November 29th, 2004, and made history with her huge brood.

Silk Road Fables
The Silk Road was a group of trade routes that went across Asia to the Mediterranean Sea. The Silk Road linked Asia with Europe. Traders and travelers began using the Silk Road more than 2,000 years ago. This let China trade with the Middle East and the Mediterranean world. It was called the Silk Road because silk was traded along it. At the time, silk was only made in China, and it was a valuable material. The Silk Road remained in use until the late Middle Ages. Today, a small part of the old route is a paved highway between Pakistan and China.

Scary Stories...
This story is good for scaring your kids at any time, but it is especially excellent if you’re camping, or planning to go for a hike. For a better effect, instead of just saying clap, actually clap, especially for the last line of the story.
A family was camping and left their tent to go on a day hike. They were a few hours from their campsite when a storm suddenly blew up. They became disoriented in the wind and driving rain.
They tried to trace their steps back to the campsite but became lost in the unfamiliar backcountry. Being experienced hikers, they knew once they were lost it was best to stay in one place than wander in the woods, so they prepared to settle down and wait for rescue.
Darkness fell, and the family built a fire to keep warm. As they snuggled up against each other and started to drift off to sleep, they heard a noise coming from the trees.
“Who’s there?” one of the parents called, but there was no answer.
Then they heard the sound again. But once more, when they called out, there was no answer.
“Perhaps it’s someone who can’t speak,” suggested the daughter. So her mom called out, “Is there anyone there? Clap once for yes and twice for no.”
There was one clap.
“You were right,” the parents said to their daughter. “There is someone out there.”
“Are you here to rescue us?” shouted the mom.
Clap clap.
“Are you lost like us?”
Clap clap.
“Do you live out here in the woods?”
Clap clap.
“Let me try,” said the son. “Are you a boy?”
Clap clap.
“Are you a girl?”
Clap clap.
They all looked at each other, puzzled.
Thinking he was being funny, the son asked: “Are you human?”
Clap clap.
Now, the family was scared.
“Are you alone?” called the mom.
Clap clap.
The family huddled together more.
“How many of you are there then?”
Clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap ….
Children aged 8 years and up will enjoy this kids’ scary story. For extra punch, load an appropriate photo onto your phone, show it to your audience at the end of the story, and tell the kids you were the babysitter in the story.
A teenage girl had been babysitting for the same family for a few years. The children were generally well behaved, and she enjoyed looking after them.
One day the family called the babysitter with a special request.
“My sister and her husband died in an accident, and we have taken in their daughter,” the father said. “She is very quiet after what happened to her parents, but she is no trouble. Would you mind looking after her as well as the other children this Saturday?”
The babysitter said she didn’t mind at all, and on Saturday evening, she went to the family’s house.
The children settled down in bed and they all quickly fell asleep, except the niece. The little girl came back downstairs and asked if she could sit with the babysitter because the monster that killed her parents wouldn’t let her go to sleep.
Thinking the little girl was imagining things, but understanding she had just lost her parents, the babysitter decided to let the little girl sit with her.
Seeing the babysitter’s phone, the little girl asked if she could take some photos with it and the babysitter said yes. The little girl cheered up, just a little, and walked around the room taking photos of her teddy in different spots and snapping sad-looking selfies.
Every now and then the little girl would run back to the babysitter, crying, and asking her to chase away the monster. To make the little girl feel better, the babysitter would pretend to chase it away.
After a while the little girl could stay awake no longer and fell asleep on the sofa. The babysitter carried her up to bed, tucked her in, and went back downstairs.
She picked up her phone with the intention of deleting the photos the little girl had taken. But when she began to look at them, she let out a scream. In each of the selfies the little girl had taken, behind her, there was a pair of red eyes staring out of a monster’s face.
