Purpose of Module

• For teachers to become aware of personal perspectives and perceptions of families living in poverty

• For teachers to become effective communicators and knowledgeable regarding economically depressed families

Goal:

Teachers will rely on knowledge and understanding of families of low socioeconomic status (SES) to promote positive and effective communication between school and home.

Objectives:

1. Identify personal perceptions related to families in poverty

2. Understand how perceptions influence behavior

3. Recognize the differences between deficit and asset mindsets regarding poverty

4. Understand the ways poverty may impact education

5. Implement communication best practices
