Jazz Ensembles

B.U.H.S. has two jazz ensembles.

The Jazz Band uses the traditional big band instrumentation (5 saxes, 4-5 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, guitar, bass and drums).

Enrollment is by audition, which happens in September. Rehearsals/classes are mostly on Thursday (or sometimes Monday) evenings from 7:00 - 9:00. Steve Rice is the teacher.

Jazz Workshop functions more as a jazz combo - with flexible instrumentation. The focus is on learning jazz tunes and improvisation skills. Auditions are required for prospective rhythm section members (piano, guitar, bass and drums). Wind players in the band are not required to audition. Eugene Uman and Rob Freeberg co-teach this class. Rehearsals/classes are mostly on Tuesday evening from 7:00 - 9:00.

Because these classes are designed as supplements to the Band curriculum, wind and percussion players wishing to enroll in a jazz ensemble must also be enrolled in Band.
