Band Audition Materials

All students wanting to enroll in band must audition with Mr. Rice.

He uses what he learns from hearing you play to make decisions about what parts to assign you (e.g. 2nd clarinet or 3rd trumpet).

He also determines the best level for you in the lesson curriculum.

Audition materials can be opened or downloaded from the files below.

Wind players must play the 5 major scales and the chromatic scale shown on the scales sheet for their instrument. If two versions of a scale are written (advanced and proficient), students should play whichever one they can - they are not expected to play both. They must also play the solo designated for their instrument.

Percussionists must play the solos for snare drum, timpani and mallets. If they have not gone to a school where timpani or mallet instruments/instruction were available, they may just play the snare solo. Percussionists must also play rudiments (long roll, 5-stroke roll, 9-stroke roll, flams, ruffs and single paradiddles) and/or 5 major scales (C, F, B-flat, E-flat and G)
