What worked for flex?
One of the best parts of my FLEX experience was the exposure to real-life veterinary situations. Being able to observe surgeries, help with routine checkups, and learn how a clinic operates gave me a deeper understanding of what being a vet actually involves. I also really appreciated how welcoming and knowledgeable all of the staff were, they were willing to explain procedures and answer questions, which made me feel more involved and motivated.
What didn't work for flex?
Honestly, it wouldn't be truthful to say something didn’t work. I genuinely believe everything worked well for me, and Ms. Thielen was beyond helpful in every way. I've never been so excited to get up in the morning and come to school, all because of this class. FLEX helped me balance my schedule, giving me a mix of challenging academic courses, practical knowledge, and something I could build for myself. I’ve learned so much through this experience. Even though not every day was perfect, that’s part of the reality of this field, and it's exactly why I wanted to test myself before college, to see if I could truly handle it.
What could I have done to make my flex experience be more successful?
I believe I could have spoken up more and asked questions more confidently, even when things felt hectic. I also could have taken more notes to reflect on what I saw each day and be a bit more assertive and proactive might have helped me get even more out of the experience.
Would you recommend a flex course like this for others? Why or why not?
I would recommend a FLEX course to anyone who learns better through hands-on experience, wants to explore a career path, or thrives with more independence. It teaches you life skills like time management, communication, and professionalism while letting you dive into real world experiences. It’s not just another normal class it’s a genuine chance to grow as a student and as a person.
Life lessons and takeaways:
What did I learn about myself as a learner?
Through my FLEX experience, I learned that I absorb information best through hands-on experience and observation. Watching real procedures and listening to the explanations from professionals helped me understand complex topics in a way that textbooks alone can’t. I also realized that I learn more effectively when I ask questions and engage in conversations, even if I feel nervous about speaking up. It reminded me that being an active learner, not just a quiet observer makes a huge difference.
What did I learn about myself as a person?
I discovered that I’m more capable and resilient than I thought. Being in a fast-paced, real-world environment pushed me outside my comfort zone, but I found that I could adapt, stay calm under pressure, and stay focused even during challenging moments. I also confirmed how passionate I am about animal care and how deeply I care about making a difference. This experience strengthened my confidence in pursuing veterinary medicine as a long-term goal and took any potential doubts I had.
