The intention for this project was to create a better routine at night, that would help me focus, experience less Lyme symptoms, and improve my insomnia. However, while reflecting on my work, I noticed that this project fits into all three categories of the Flex curriculum. Physically, I was able to become more flexible, and balanced in my body. In turn, this allowed me to take on hikes and bike rides at higher intensities. Mentally, I found I was able to approach stressful situations, for example taking my AP US History Exam, with a new sense of calm. Medically, my Lyme traits, like joint pain, were aided by the more intense yoga practices.
Projects
This was my first part, the inspiration paper. It highlights the issues I face, and what I noticed helps. With the help of my mom, who knows a lot about yoga, I wanted to create a baseline yoga routine, that I could add on as I learned more. Additionally, I wanted to limit my phone use an hour before I went to bed, and add in more journaling and reading time.
Next, I researched yoga to gain a better understanding. I learned the history, and how it was spread across the world as well as the different branches of yoga. I then found more about the sub branch Asana, which are the poses themselves. I also found some suggested routines to keep in mind while I made my own. With this information, I wrote my research paper, which leads to my next project.
I formed a yoga survey to track my progress. I chose to make a survey because it was something I could quickly fill out, and look back on for patterns and information. The questions were made to look back on to determine if yoga was combating any of my symptoms in short term form. The biggest thing I learned from this project is how much of a tool yoga has become for me.
From this survey, I wrote a data analysis and reflection paper. Something that stood out to me was an unexpected result: this year I prepared to take the AP U.S. History Exam, a continuously stressful task. That being said, when I took the test at the beginning of May, I felt completely calm. Test anxiety is something I struggle with, and I was so glad to notice my thoughts remained clear during the exam.
