I have had some experience in making murals for fun, for school, and by commission. I find it a great way to make a difference in my community using an art form, and so I started thinking about locations to create a new one. Eventually, I settled on the New England Youth Theater. Here is the process I went through.
Here are the murals I have created over the past few years.
The process of creating this mural turned out to be much larger than I had anticapated. I knew it would be a big commitment, but once I finally started painting half way through the semester, and then realized I wasn't even half way done with the first of five big panels, I felt a little overwhelmed. I am grateful that I don't have a harsh deadline on this project, because it is expanding beyond what I had planned for. That being said, I'm also gaining confidence in the painting process, and with that comes an increasing pace that I can maintain. Overall, getting the mural onto its feet was certainly a task. But with the help of Ms Thielen, the set designer Dave Regan, and the great enthusiasm of the NEYT staff, it all came together wonderfully. Now, I am tasked with finding as much free time as I possibly can to paint.
Were I to give advise to someone taking on a similar project to this, I would have a few suggestions.
Don't expect others to keep you on task or even expect you to finish, in a self lead project, no one will hold you to the right standards except your self
Try to be realistic, but leave room for miscalculations like budget and time management
Take help when it's offered, you'll need all the assistance you can get, and people want to see you succeed
