My name Is Desmond, a senior at BUHS. I have a passion for many art forms, as well as environmental activism, skiing, piano, theater, and more. I have also traveled to Germany, Switzerland, Austria, India, Italy, and Ghana (but I've never been to Canada). I am currently applying to colleges, but plan to ask for deferral. After high school, I will take a gap year and explore my interests further, and then go into higher education that will prepare me to make an impact in my fields of interest. Currently I am most drawn towards persuing fine arts, as well as environmental science, policy, or a similar field.
I joined my Flex course because I wanted the time frame and flexibility to pursue personal interests that could benefit the community and my education. I was having exciting ideas about things I could do, but they were solo projects and didn't fit into any school-offered classes. Flex seemed like a great opportunity to stay in a monitored schedule so I would be held accountable in following through, but still have lots of freedom over what I was choosing to persue.
In my course, I most often met twice weekly with Ms Thielen, my Flex Coordinator. This varied week by week, however, depending on our availabilty and my need for assistance in the moment. Some weeks, I would be on a roll with my applications and projects, and wouldn't require a meeting at all. Throughout the course, I documented all the steps I took in my projects, and when, where, why, and how they happened. This was to have proof of my progress for the Flex course, but also became very helpful in keeping track of my whole life and schedule.
This class is highly relevant to what I plan on pursuing after high school. For one, it has given me the time and structure to complete my 8 college applications. This will hopefully get me into a school that fits my interests and criteria, which I can attend for four years or more. Other than that, it is also helping me expand on my interest in muraling. This project of creating a mural for a local organization couldn't have happened without the Flex course to create the space and time. This is relevant because I am very interested in furthering my study of how fine arts intersect with activism and social change. I have found that creating murals is one of the most direct and effective methods of this, and so the Flex course is helping me expand my understanding and experience in that field.
