Language can be tricky for kids at this young age, especially when they are having big emotions or struggles at home or school. That is why I use PLAY as a way to help them express their feelings. PLAY is non-confrontational, child centered, and fun! I am a Registered PLAY Therapist (RPT) and use PLAY Therapy with the students that I see in my office at school. Most children who come to see me view it as a playroom not an office! The room is full of purposefully selected toys that children use in the way they need.
My preferred method of counseling children is Child-Centered PLAY Therapy. This counseling approach is based on the belief that children have the internal drive to achieve wellness. Play Therapy can help children solve problems, improve relationship skills, and develop coping strategies. If we give them the tools and guide them in the right direction, children can do amazing things!
