English Language Arts

Reading
Students will listen, speak, read, write, view, and represent to explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences throughout the use of the Nelson Literacy program. Instructional approaches facilitate a gradual release of responsibility, from read aloud to shared reading, guided reading and independent experiences in all the language arts. Students will explore opportunities for in-depth study and enjoyment of a variety of literary forms, text types and structures in fiction and non-fiction materials.

Writing
Students are provided with multiple opportunities to speak, listen, read, write, and develop media literacy through guided, shared and independent opportunities. The six traits of writing will be taught and embedded throughout all subject areas throughout the year. These traits are developing ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.

Word Study - Word study will be taught in small groups in order to provide students with appropriate instruction.

Students will look at spelling patterns and word families, as well as learn how to apply strategies in their daily written work. Word study will also help enhance student vocabulary.
