Situation: Our Latinos in Action group goes to a neighboring elementary school to tutor Kindergarten students 4 days a week. This is a program that helps the elementary students get one-on-one time with a reading tutor, but it also helps junior high students develop confidence, patience and social skills.
Problem: Covid--students at the junior high and the elementary could not collaborate with quarantine protocols.
Goal-Aligned Instructional Strategy: Peer Tutoring: In this strategy, the capacity of elementary students is immensley increased when they have the individualized attention and the motivation of working with a junior high student.
Digital Tools: Book Creator: We used this software program to create individualized books for the elementary students that would be tutored. Each book was tailored to the interests of the elementary student. We printed the books out in full color and bound the books and then them to the elementary school with care packages of other books. The junior high students also added an audio component so that the students could listen to the book if they wanted. We created this website so that elementary students could access the audio component.
